Just finfished reading the book: Nickel and Dimed
For those who have not read it, it's non-fiction, written by a woman who worked a series of dead-end jobs in various parts of the country to see how people could get by working for $7 an hour. She worked as a waitress, a dietary tech in a nursing home, a maid, and a Wal-Mart "associate." Fascinating read. Very sad to see how those who work for near the minimum wage work hand to mouth. Highly recommended.

1. Very good book
she's written a new one I haven't read yet... about middle class white collar workers.
I'm going to have to pick it up.

3. I read that book awhile ago
It was very good, but something about the author really irked me. She seemed to have a bit of a superiority complex - like just because she had a PhD she expected people to see her as something special, and was chagrined when they treated her like any other waitress/maid/menial worker. And when she was trying to whip up support for a union at Walmart, the way she described it made it seem like it was more of a game to her - like, "oh, I'm leaving, so it doesn't really matter." I still think the book is certainly worth reading and would recommend it to anyone, though.
