Late night music thread. What are the Du'ers listening to?
I am listening to Duke Ellington "At Newport." I dig it. Before that, the new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. It's gotten some pretty lame reviews but I think it is great.

45. Well, we just got back from the Oregon Symphony.
Carlos Kalmar conducted a program of Brahms, Rossini, the original Engelbert Humperdinck, and another South American composer I'm to lazy to look up in the program which is in another room.

Anybody else like classical music?

47. Hi Peggy! You're here on Saturday night, too!
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 01:36 AM by Radio_Lady
Nice to know we share at least THREE things in common.

Being up at night is the first.

And living on the West Coast is #2.

Now, here's #3 -- classical music -- which I love from afar right from childhood, because I consume it on CD, cassette tapes, and radio. I don't play an instrument, although both my parents did. Dad on the violin, Mom on the piano -- and lots and lots of radio and records to accompany my afternoons when they were both at work.

I listen to classical music most of the time, except when I listen to jazz -- we have both represented on non-commercial radio stations here in Portland. Only listen to talk radio when I want to raise my blood pressure several points.

Who's your favorite composer?
Tchaikovsky is mine -- love almost everything he wrote. Kind of plebian tastes for the Russians -- Prokofiev, Mussorgsky, etc.

Favorite classical piece?

Used to be Debussy's "Clair de Lune" -- now I like Ravel's "Le Tombeau de Couperin".

48. I suppose my favorite composer is Beethoven..but there are so many...
Or maybe it's Mendelsohhn..spelling? I love especially the Classical/Romantic composers, though I also love folks like Copland, too...

And the same goes for favorite piece..too many .......But nearly anything from the above-mentioned composers.....

I especially love the big pieces...the symphonies, the concertos..

Le Tombeau de Couperin makes me get up and dance about my study! But so do many other works.....

Like yourself, I too grew up with classical music. And I'm doubly blessed because my husband plays the piano..classical and jazz...

me to the symphony and can recognize some classical themes now that I've been playing recordings of them for him for 33 years. I have all the Beethoven symphonies, but my favorite is the Dance Symphony, #7. I forgot. (This is a fun site -- the top 100 list from WCRB, the classical station in Boston, with brief excerpts...)

http://140.239.61.3/cgi-bin/univ/univ.pl?page=essential.html&station=wcrb

But my husband is a whiz at plumbing, electrical work, software, mathematics, including bank by mail, travel arrangements, and he's pretty good at gardening, horseback (trail) riding, walking and talking, garage sale-ing, and, of course, other unmentionable physical activities --if you know what I mean, jelly bean...

When I was divorced in the early 1970s, I had a fling with a millionaire who had been dumped by two wives. He played the piano SO beautifully and frequently played when I visited him in his magnificent home in South Miami, Florida. He was excellent in the lovemaking department and I remember he had a closet with the most gorgeous clothes, running from "white" to "black" along a whole wall. He also did drugs to some degree, hashish as I remember, and that was rather worrisome (I don't -- and didn't).

He also had a younger woman who was interested in him -- I think her name was Laura. Regrettably, he had four children from the two divorces, and didn't want anything to do with my youngsters, who were just tiny kiddos. We dated for a while, and then he told me he was paying for Laura's college and the relationship was over.

But, oh, that piano music on a warm night in Florida with the moon out above the palm trees. I often wonder what happened to that fellow. He has such a common name that I'd never find him in a million years on the Internet...

Well, my hubby's taking me to Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii in October. We'll sit in some piano bar and someone else will play...

Good night in peace,

Radio Lady

Gretchen Wilson - All Jacked Up (full album can be heard legally at cmt.com. She IS pandering too much on this CD, as "All Jacked Up" and "Skoal Ring" are clever, while "California Girls" and "Politically Uncorrect" are obnoxious. It's befuddling that great writers like Leslie Satcher and Wynn Varble write dreck when they enter the political realm. As an aside, Darrell Scott wasn't much better with "We've Got Nothing But Love To Prove," a Faith Hill song. This all said, there's enough on the Gretchen album to recommend it. And "I Don't Feel Like Loving You Today" is an absolute jewel of a song.)

Coldplay - X&Y - it might not be as good as A Rush Of Blood To The Head, but I find Coldplay captivating. The album's still a keeper, as I know I'll be listening to it.

I've started listening to Emma Roberts samples again. This is after I saw a 4-star review of the album on All Music Guide - http://www.allmusic.com. A negative review hardly ever has an impact on me, but sometimes a well-done positive review will make me reconsider. Jill Sobule(!) was actually involved, making me even more interested in seeing if it grows on me.
