good media viewer?
I like to use the viewer which comes with winamp, or, in a pinch, Windows Media Player.

But...some of the net vids I have play audio-only on these formats, even though they are tagged as .mov or whatever compatible file format.

Is there a good viewer that's not as fussy? I need to watch my bootleg "Family Guy" episodes at work...

1. That's a really complex question
There are far too many media formats out there and far too little information available on most of them.

As far as viewers goes, I'm particularly fond of Media Player Classic. But no player will work if you don't have the proper codecs. There's a nice little utility called GSpot that can usually tell you what codecs a particular file needs, but then you have to go out with Google and find them to download.

I suspect that if you're low on resources, that could cause you to get audio-only as well. (This is especially true on Windows 98 -- later versions of Windows don't have the same fixed limit on resources.) If that were the case, a reboot could resolve the problem. But codecs are the most likely answer.

3. you probably need the divx or xvid codec..
download and install those, and your Windows Media Player should work fine.

4. I like Quicktime because it doesn't screw around with buffering.
I don't know too much about these sorts of things, but the 'buffering' that WMP and RealPlayer/RealOne does drives me up a friggety fraggin wall.

As to your specific problem,
I agree with the above poster who said you probably need to download some kind of divx codec--hopefully someone more knowledgeable will check in. Good luck!

5. .mov files are best with quicktime
and .avi files are best with DivxPlayer 2.0

www.webattack.com has lots of freeware players.

Alas, if only there was 1 piece software outthere that played every file format, or, at least, could be easily modified to.

I have 4 video players on mine, and I got all of the formats covered (the 2 mentioned, WMP, Realplayer)
