According to the curent exchange rate, that's 500 bucks! Some of it is earmarked for DU.
Of course, that is what the Banco de Mexico website says. Most of it looks like it has not been updated since Clinton was President. Will call them tommorow to find out.

YEEEEEH Haaaaaw.

3. what year were they printed?
If they were printed before 1993, the rate of exchange is 1000 old pesos to ONE new peso.

So 5275 pesos is only 5.275 pesos, or $0.53.

Check the dates and respond back.

10. To be exchanged, bills MUST look like this:

The bills may say "Nuevos Pesos" or just "Pesos," but as long as they look like the above pictures, you're ok.

If they look like this:

You will have A LOT OF TROUBLE getting rid of them, but they are at the same value as the above pictured notes, ie 10 pesos = 10 pesos; and you MAY find an exchange outfit that will take them.

BUT, if you have bills with the same pictures as the second set pictured, but instead of saying 10, it says 10,000, you have older, unexchangeable notes. If you have any notes that look like ANYTHING else.... well, you've got a nice new bookmark.

Good luck, hope you have the upper pictures.

6. A nice surprise! But do you have any Confederate $$$ stashed?
That's going to be the coin of the realm here, shortly.

9. Hey, don't knock Confederate money
It's really popular with collectors and is often worth more now than it was in the heyday of the Confederacy. Take this baby, for example-- worth (maybe) one Confederate dollar in 1861, now fetching $225!

11. It's nice to see you again, Art...
with another interesting and informative post on historic American currency! I was really intrigued by some of the facts you shared in the "new nickel" thread.

Frighteningly enough, I'm looking at the right-hand signature on that banknote and I do believe it belongs to my boss.

Maybe if you took the beard away, the guy in the picture would look like your boss!

7. Um, I hate to maybe bust your bubble, but
are you aware that Mexico called in the old pesos in 1993 and replaced them with "new pesos" at a rate of 1000 old pesos for one new peso?

Here's an explanation from the Bank of Mexico:

"In order to simplify the expression of quantities in domestic currency, on January 1st, 1993, a new unit of the Mexican Monetary System was created.Ê This unit is equivalent to 1,000 pesos of the previous unit.Ê The adjective "nuevo" (new) was used before the name "peso" in the new unit for a transitory period, in order to differentiate it from the former monetary unit.Ê The use of this adjective was suppressed on 1996.Ê Banco de Mexico issued, starting from 1993, a new series of banknotes denominated in "nuevos pesos" (new pesos).Ê These banknotes, known as Type B Banknotes, have the same designs as the banknotes prevoiusly in circulation.Ê In October, 1994, the issuing of other series of banknotes took place:Ê the Type C Banknotes, which are also denominated in "nuevos pesos", but with new designs.Ê The process ended with the elimination of the adjective "nuevo" from the name of the unit in the series of banknotes issued since 1996.Ê These banknotes, known as Type D Banknotes, have the same designs as the type C banknotes, but the use of the adjective "nuevo" has been ommitted."
