Although I recommended "Citizen Cohn" in my old "Movies for Democrats" series, I had never actually seen it, although I knew the subject matter would be interesting.
Tonight it was shown on HBO Signature, and I give it my thumbs up.
For those of you who don't know, attorney Roy Cohn was Senator Joseph McCarthy's chief attack dog during the McCarthy Era. The movie opens with him dying of AIDS in 1986 and tells the story in flashbacks: how he rose to prominence, what he did during the McCarthy era, and how his egotism and cruelty led to disgrace. The film takes on a slightly surreal aspect, because as Cohn is in the last stages of AIDS, he starts hallucinating visions of some of the people he hurt.
It stars James Woods (who I believe has become a right winger, or am I thinking of someone else?) and you will recognize many of the other faces in the cast.
If you get HBO Signature, you can find the film this month 11/15 at noon, 11/19 at 12:40AM, and 11/26 at 4PM.
