Okay, so I'm wrong.

Being a stupid fool I managed to think up an equation which prevented the use of the usual formula (because 4ac is greater than b^2). I manually solved as accurately as "x is smidgen below 2.195" - then I found a web-site which gave me the answers immediately.

I tried to solve your equation last night; I couldn't factorise it, so I had to use the formula and found, as you point out, that b^2 is less than 4ac, so the roots are imaginary. So where did those real values come from?

actually so are you (no offence).

c is -32

therefore 4ac is -384

therefore b^2-4ac is 448 which has the perfectly normal root of 21.166

and then just now noticed that they refer to sqrt448. :banghead:

at x=0 y=-32, and as x rises from there so does y; which is why I was puzzled that the equation "didn't work".
