Do all threads eventually degenerate into flame wars?

Do all threads eventually degenerate into flame wars?
If a thread lasts long enough, will it eventually be locked because of a protracted flame war between two or more of the posters which may or may not have anything to do with the subject matter of the original thread?

Any theories?

2. I don't know about flame wars, but Godwin's law famously states
that as usenet threads grow, the probability that someone will mention the Nazis approaches 1.

I think the same probably applies to web forums as well. :)

It seems to me that if the thread doesnt have a flame war it will die. Theres only so long that people will keep agreeing with each other. The only exception to that rule seems to be stuff like when they had that thread and all the military DU'ers checked in? Like lists of stuff. The photo threads are the same. But a topic thread has to have dissent in order for people to keep posting. Otherwise it would be 300 "me too"s and nobody would bother after a while.

6. A flamewar isn't really about disagreeing.
It is when it turns into attacks. Disagreeing is part of having a group of lots of people. We don't agree on everything. That is just normal.

I more meant a disagreement. Ive seen threads go on really long with only productive argument. But then to answer the original question, yeah they do seem to eventually go into a flamewar eventually.
