Meteor Shower
Aren't the Leonids(?) supposed to peak soon?
Where can I look for information on that?

1. Wednesday, Nov. 19th

The 2003 Leonid meteor shower is set to peak on the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 19th. Sky watchers on the Atlantic side of North America are favored; they could see as many as 100 meteors per hour.

I would recomend checking out SpaceWeather.com for more info

3. Probably NOT a great show

This isn't a peak year.

I think next November and November 2006 are supposed to be good years for the Leonids; but 1999 and 2001 were the peak storms.

According to many meteorite watchers, the Perseids should storm soon. Normally you can see about 50 Perseids per hour at peak around August 13th. Unlike the Leonids, the Perseids are slower and produce more big meteors.

Bill Cooke from NASA made the most optimistic prediction this year. This site also has an audio program about the meteors.

You can also check the University of Armaugh's site.

4. 2002 was a very good show

I didn't see 1999 or 2001 so I don't know how it compared, but last year's Leonids were the single most spectacular meteor display I have ever seen.

If that wasn't a peak year, then I must have really missed something special in 1999 and 2001.

How is this year supposed to compare to last year? Even if it's only half or a quarter as good, it will be well worth watching.

EDIT: Found a link that implies this will indeed not be a particularly interesting show this year, unless you are very lucky: http://skyandtelescope.com/observing/objects/meteors/article_1101_1.asp
