1. Well, where I was in Ohio had more churches than bars
In Wisconsin, it seems to be the other way around. I don't know about in Missouri, but in my area of Ohio, there were several different Protestant denomination as well as ethnic communities that founded different ones.
In Wisconsin, it seems that many people are Luthern or Catholic. Those churches are bigger and may be the only churches in smaller towns. In my part of Ohio, the Catholic churches were bigger (might have to do with the Catholic hierarchy and availibilty of priests too) while Luthernism wasn't as big of a denonimation. Both Lutherns and Catholics seem to presently and historically neutral to positive on the issues of alcohol. Religious people in those churches were not afraid or embarassed to be seen in bars. In Ohio, some of the other denominations are presently or have been historically against the use of alcohol. A religious person wouldn't want their religious grandmother or minister to know that they go to bars.
I don't know about Missouri. I was just explaining my observations about Wisconsin, which you mentioned, and Ohio, another state I know about which has more churches than bars (at least in the area where I lived).

2. RE Catholicism and alcohol
A short poem by Hillaire Belloc:

Where e'er the Catholic sun doth shine
There's always laughter and good red wine
At least I've always found it so
Benedicamus Domino.

9. Beer came about because of Catholism
During Lent, since drinking wine was forbidden (except during mass ceremony), monks found a loophole to this in church rule, and we have what we have today.

18. Ancient Egyptians had beer.
Monks did brew extra potent beers for during Lent as they would be eating practically nothing, and would still be working the fields, as liquid they did not count as eating food.

A diet consisting totally of  - now that does sound like fun.

4. Not sure. Here in Wisconsin it seems like there are as many churches
as bars--sometimes one of each on one block. (though probably more bars if one were to add them up).

I know a lot of people who go to church, then out for bloody marys. Or out to catch the Packer game and a beer or two after services. My aunt and her family did that for years.

I know that's not really an answer to your question, but it's Saturday so there are my two cents anyway.

off to work. later skaters. :hi:

7. It all depends on the neighborhood.... I guess...
There is a suburb of Cleveland that has about 60 bars and 45-50 churches....

13. I was especially suprised in the small towns
In really small Ohio villages, like under 500, there might be one bar. In Wisconsin, there seems to be 3-5. It must be profitable to do that or there must be several people that don't want to drink together.

17. Bars and Wisconsin... it's like Peanut butter and Jelly.
I live in a small city in south-central wisconsin. On an average street, the businesses look like this: Gas station, bar, bar, liquor store, gun shop, bar, bar, cemetery, bar, bar, golf course, Elks club, bar, bar, motel.
