Why do I get the feeling this poll has been conducted several times already?

I did that: Innagodadavida by Iron Butterfly. And yes, I probably spelled that wrong, but oh well, I was stoned when I put it on the record player (I told you it's been a long time!)

32. How about "Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother"?
A big hit & favorite singalong from the fabled days of the Austintatious Kozmik Kowboys.

M is for the Mudflaps on my pickup truck.
O is for the Oil I put on my hair.
T is for T-Bird.
H is for Haggard.
E is for Enema.
R is for REDNECK!

It took Ray Wiley Hubbard many years to get over writing that particular anthem. Then he wrote "Screw You, We're from Texas."

That boy has a really weird website! www.raywylie.com/

7. Centuries ago, when I smoked pot, I used to listen to the Grateful Dead.
Recently I heard some of that stuff again and I realized that the Dead almost never played in tune.

I'm glad I quit. I can't believe I ever did something so dumb in the first place.

29. I still smoke weed and listen to The Grateful Dead
and LOVE it. L O V E it! Best concerts I ever saw were The Dead. There's nothing wrong with getting a bit altered mentally and checking out a cool band ya know. Sometimes The Dead will be in such a groove I get goosebumps all over. It's like "the zone" man. Sorry you don't get it. :(

Saint Stephen with a rose, in and out of the garden he goes,
Country garden in the wind and the rain,
Wherever he goes the people all complain.
Stephen prospered in his time, well he may and he may decline.
Did it matter, does it now? Stephen would answer if he only knew how.
Wishing well with a golden bell, bucket hanging clear to hell,
Hell halfway twixt now and then,
Stephen fill it up and lower down and lower down again.
Lady finger, dipped in moonlight, writing "What for?" across the morning sky.
Sunlight splatters, dawn with answer, darkness shrugs and bids the day goodbye.
Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow,
What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned.
Several seasons with their treasons,
Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own.
Did he doubt or did he try? Answers aplenty in the bye and bye,
Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills,
One man gathers what another man spills.
Saint Stephen will remain, all he's lost he shall regain,
Seashore washed by the suds and foam,
Been here so long, he's got to calling it home.
Fortune comes a crawlin', calliope woman, spinnin' that curious sense of your own.
Can you answer? Yes I can. But what would be the answer to the answer man?

72. My bad - you're right
Sometimes I get overly sensitive/protective when it comes to The Dead. They just meant soooooo much to me during my high school years growing up here in the bible belt of NC. Just to know that there were guys out there who wanted to be free, play good music, and experiment with psychedelics with no apologies.. well, I could go on and on. At any rate, sorry I over-reacted. Dopey me - taking life too seriously again. :dunce:

I'm purported to have some of the WORST taste in music on this entire site. You're talking to a guy who can put on a Throbbing Gristle record and hold a polite conversation with his mother on the other end of the phone.

And I have to admit, if the mood's right, a little Dead does the trick quite nicely.

(now where did I put my Ambien) :P

but I love the GD and I've never seen them in concert. I'm in my early 20s so it was all sort of before my time. I have, however, seen Dark Star Orchestra in concert and was blown away...

The Dead wrote some meaningful, poetic songs (especially Hunter and Barlow) and their music speaks to me like few bands can.

Has anyone actually ever listened to the lyrics to a song like Weather Report Suite or Eyes of the World? They are literary masterpieces! And isn't Terrapin Station one of the most beautiful songs EVER?

I've never understood those who are so quick to criticize the Dead and then throw in their Judas Priest tape.

To each his own I guess. :)

P.S. Ever seen this website: http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/ ?

9. Shanty by Jonathan Edwards
Gonna sit down in the kitchen
And fix me something good to eat
And make my head a little high
And make this whole day complete
Cuz we gonna lay around the shanty, mama
And put a good buzz on

Well pass it to me baby
Pass it to me slow
We'll take time out to smile a little
Before we let it go
Cuz we gonna lay around the shanty, mama
And put a good buzz on

Well there ain't nothin' to do
And there's always room for more
Fill it, light it, shut up
And close the door
Cuz we gonna lay around the shanty, mama
And put a good buzz on

We gonna sit around the kitchen
Fix us somethin' good to eat
And make ourselves a little high
And make the whole day complete
Cuz we gonna lay around the shanty, mama
And put a good buzz on
Cuz we gonna lay around the shanty, mama
And put a good buzz on

10. Fugs: Marijuana (1968) US
Marijuana is a Gregorian chant listing all the names of pot, symbolizing its right to be smoked as part of a religious experience. It is 30 years ahead of its time considering the Gregorian monks now sell millions of records.

most stuff by Pink Floyd - I'll single out the live version of Great Gig in the Sky and the studio version of Shine on You Crazy Diamond.

"Ganja" by the little-known Stone City Band

Vivaldi's Four Seasons - Carmignola and the Venice Baroque Orchestra

Campus Grill where all the stoners and drunks too and a combination thereof would show 3AM. Along with disgruntled normal-headed late shift people who did not always appreciate us. Food always tasted great though. That place is gone through urban removal but probably other places like it in the area. Though not as convenient.

31. "Don't bogart" was from the Fraternity of Man...
Of which the late, great Lowell George was a member. Little Feat played it, later. Lowell wrote "Willin'"--give me weed, whites & wine & I'll show you a sign that I'm willin' to be movin'.

A couple of obscure memories: "Acapulco Gold" & "She Pawned her Dianmond for Some Gold." And the Jim Kweskin Jug Band's rendition of "If You're a Viper."

Here's a fairly complete list of pot songs. Who really wrote what?

www.ukcia.org/potculture/references/records.html

(Houston's own rock/jazz band, Smokin' Fitz, played Cab Callaway's "The Reefer Man.")

Plus most tunes by Bob Marley & most of the reggae crew.

You know I work so hard, all day long
Everything I try to do, seems to always turn out wrong
That's why I wanna' stop by, on my way home and say
Let's go get stoned

(Let me tell you one more thing)
Ain't no harm, to have a little taste
But don't lose your cool, and start messing up the man's place
Ain't no harm, to take a little nip
But don't you fall down, and bust your lip
Let's go get stoned

Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 10:57 AM by sparosnare
Now heaven would be a DJ
Spinning up all night long
And Heaven would be just kickin' back
With Jesus packing my bong
And if you don't believe in Jesus then Mohammed or Buddha too
And while the world is warring
We'll just sit back and laugh at you

:D I'm certainly not a skater, but I love this song.

42. I'm only sleeping -Tomorrow Never Knows-Lennon and McCarthy Revolver
When I wake up early in the morning.
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (float up stream)
Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am - I'm only sleeping.

Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find there's no need (there's no need)
Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping.

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time.
Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling...
Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping.

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time.

When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (float up stream)
Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am - I'm only sleeping

Or

Tomorrow Never Knows
(Lennon/McCartney)

Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream,
It is not dying, it is not dying.
Lay down al thoughts, surrender to the void,
It is shining, it is shining.
Yet you may see the meaning of within
It is being, it is being.

Love is all and love is everyone
It is knowing, it is knowing.

And ignorance and hate mourn the dead
It is believing, it is believing.

But listen to the color of your dreams
It is not leaving, it is not leaving.

So play the game "Existence" to the end
Of the beginning, of the beginning

How can ANYone leave off a 65-minute heavier-than-the-Earth-itself dirge about a stoner caravan making their way to Jerusalem when talking about pot-smoking songs?

That and anything by Bongzilla (that's all they sing about). Get some metal into the mix, man.

53. Other (please specify)...
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
Goin' up to the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
Gonna go to the place that's the best

Prepare yourself you know it's a must
Gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He's gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
Gonna recommend you
To the spirit in the sky
That's where you're gonna go when you die
When you die and they lay you to rest
You're gonna go to the place that's the best

Never been a sinner I never sinned
I got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die
He's gonna set me up with
The spirit in the sky
Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky
That's where I'm gonna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Go to the place that's the best

84. "A Day In The Life" - Beatles
I read the news today oh, boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph

He blew his mind out in a car
He didn’t notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They’d seen his face before,
Nobody was really sure if he was from the House of Lords.

I saw a film today oh, boy
The English army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had a look
Having read the book,
I’d love to turn you on...

Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.

Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream

Ah..................

I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all,
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.
I’d love to turn you on...

You know, Black Sabbath.

Alright now!!
Won’t you listen?

When I first met you, didn’t realize
I can’t forget you, for your suprize
You introduced me, to my mind
And left me wanting, you and your kind

I love you, oh you know it

My life was empty forever on a down
Until you took me, showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you sweet leaf, though you can’t hear

Come on now, try it out

Straight people don’t know, what your about
They put you down and shut you out
You gave to me a new belief
And soon the world will love you sweet leaf

79. Mary Jane by Rick James
I'm in love with Mary Jane.
She's my main thing.
She makes me feel alright.
She makes my heart sing.
And when I'm feeling low,
She comes as no surprise.
Turns me on with her love.
Takes me to paradise.
Do you love me Mary Jane?
Do ya? Do ya? Do ya?
Now do you think you love me Mary Jane.
Don't you play no games.

I'm in love with Mary Jane.
I'm not the only one.
If Mary wanna play around,
I let her have her fun.
She's not the kind of girl
that you can just tie down.
She likes to spread her love
and turn your head around.
