6 Year Olds Fight Over Pacifier - Police Called
<snip>

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Normally, a fight between two children over a pacifier might be resolved by their mothers.

But in Pawtucket, the police had to step in.

It all started Monday afternoon, when a 6-year-old boy dropped a pacifier. Another 6-year-old boy picked it up and refused to give it back, allegedly prompting the first child to deliver a punch. Police said the boy with the pacifier then punched back.

Pawtucket Police Detective Donti Rosciti said one of the mothers called police, saying she wanted the fist fight documented because her son had three minor scratches on his face, and she didn't want his school accusing her of abuse.

A patrolman wrote up a report, then went to the home of the other child to speak with his parents, Rosciti said. He called the case very unusual.

"I've never seen a report with two kids this young," he said.

Rosciti said that as far as police are concerned, the matter is over.

"A 6-year-old can't be held criminally responsible," he said.

1. You know, there is one question that I think many of us DUers have
What the hell is a 6-year-old still doing with a pacifier. I know that pacifiers serve a purpose but if I'm correct, long term pacifier use can be harmful to teeth & mouth development.

7. My first thought.
I know it can be hard to get them to give it up, but man. And the mother who called the police?

13. They have them because their parents are weak
The parents would rather cave in to Junior and let him have his pacifier than take it away.

Obviously these two parents have problems disciplining their kids on many levels. You've got to feel sorry for kids who's parents don't know how to control situations.

18. My question for you: How do we know it was the 6-year-old's pacifier?
It could have been his one-year-old brother's or something. The article doesn't say.

6. Pacifiers don't cause violence....
um people cause violence over a pacifier.

This is about as odd as seeing someone kill something at a peace protest ;-) ;-)

9. She wanted the fight documented? Why didn't she just stop it?
I guess I see her logic, but kids get scratched up sometimes. Between the ages of 2-12 I had a new band-aid on pretty much once a week. Things happen.

10. It wouldn't be wise to get between two 6 year olds in a pacifier fight...
I read that in a Parenting Magazine once.

11. A parent's who's kid is still cramming its face with a pacifier is NOT a
parent in control of ANYTHING.

She needs help, that's for sure. Poor kid.

15. Not at all. Most parents do a really good job, as I'm sure you would.
It's the ones who do this sort of crap that worry the rest of us!

16. Had she been accused before of abusing her kid?
B/C I see no other reason to call the cops. Kids get scratches all of the time. Why would her school accuse her of abusing the child if they didn't have more reason to believe it? And why the hell is a 6 year old sucking a pacifier?

17. I don't think I even learned how to punch until I was 10 or older.
I thought 6-year olds slap each other.
