Why is it that when I get 5 hours of sleep for 5 nights in a row,
I can function adequately, but last night I finally got a chance and went to bed before 11 and woke up at 6 and now I have a headache and can barely keep my eyes open?

:hangover:

1. Maybe 5 hours is the right amount for you?
 All I know is, if I crash out for more than ten hours, I feel like total crap when I finally haul my ass out of bed.

2. I can't keep up the 5 hours indefinitely, though...
I drag after awhile. At some point I need to catch up. It didn't work this time...

4. Maybe you didn't catch up enough then?
You got seven hours, which is a decent sleep, but that's probably what you should be getting every day. Maybe once you went past five hours your body thought "cool, a chance to catch up," but was rudely awakened once it had only got going?

3. maybe because
your body thought you were going to make up for all the lost sleep, and when you didn't, it felt cheated.

We really do need 8 hours of sleep every night. Lots of people think they can get away w/ much less, but the truth is that VERY few people truly need less than 8 hours. (I got this from a book by someone of the name of Dement... "The Promise of Sleep".)

5. I know what you mean
I'm the same way. I feel great after 4 or 5 hrs of sleep but if I get any more than that, I feel all achy and shit.
