Happy Thread! I have electricity and Winston is sitting at my feet.

:woohoo: I have electricity now at my FEMA mansion (okay, it's a travel trailer, but it's better than what I had after 8:30 a.m on August 29). The first night I stayed in it was Monday night. I think trailer life will be very interesting.

My terrier, Winston, had surgery to correct his left hip on Monday and I have him with me now. :hug: He is trying to heal, but since the right hip still needs to be fixed (the car that hit him broke his pelvis), his recovery is painful and he will yelp in pain if I hold him wrong or if he lies down wrong. He hobbles around a little bit, but mostly he sleeps and lies in his box watching me, making sure I don't leave him. His appetite is good and the vet said these little guys heal quickly. (I sure hope so, he painful yelps hurt my heart. :cry: )

And I FINALLY was able to register with the Red Cross today and get a check from them. :thumbsup: I was annoyed by the fellow that handed me the check when he said "Spend it wisely, this is all you are getting from this organization." :wtf: What are they doing with all the money they raised? Oh well, no grumbling, this is a happy thread!! :-)

I have taken several baby steps this week and I am doing better than a lot of folks! A good many DUers have helped me in so many ways, I am blessed to be a member of this community! :grouphug:

I refused to stay in the trailer without electricity. Looting is still going on in some of the neighborhoods (I know a lady that was knocked out when looters were in the remains of her home. They hit her over the head with a can of stew and ran.) There aren't that many neighbors around me, so I didn't want to take any chances without power. (All homes on my street were severely damaged or destroyed.) It took a while to get electricity and now that I have it, I can settle in to my little world and take on the next challenge. (Getting my lot cleared is the next challenge.) :hi:

So many people here are in the same boat, it's rare to met someone that has not suffered due to Katrina. I'm just doing what I have to do. The good wishes that you and other DUers send my way help out tremendously. Thank you. :hug:

My parents have always been RVers so I'm curious.

and they are creating new ones. (There was a problem with landlords evicting tenants without notice in an attempt to make the rent money that FEMA was offering. :-( )

The trailer that FEMA provided is a 30 foot travel trailer. I think the brand name is "Cavalier".

And I hear that when this whole mess is over, they are going to give hurricane victims the option to buy the trailer at greatly reduced prices. Put that trailer on the back of your jeep, and let's go visit DUers! :D

(I don't have the storage cabinets over the dinette and the sofa.) It is a nice trailer - I have been very comfortable and am adapting quite nicely.

And if I get my house built and have the chance, I'll buy it at the reduced price and we can take off across country to visit DUers from one end of the country to the other. MMJr can sleep on the bunk and you can have the sofa that converts to a bed! ;-)

We lived in a trailer when we were building our cabin. It was interesting, no doubt. Really, it was kinda fun. Like you told me when my car broke down in Terrell, it's an adventure. With your positive outlook, I know that you'll cope well.

I am on the couch with a combination cold and a stomach virus. I've slept all day. I'll call you as soon as I feel up to it.

I went to a financial distribution center that was in a predominately black community. I know others took offense to his "warning" and a couple of us waiting in line had considered carrying on about meeting at the bar after we got our check ("Yeah, Terry the bartender told me he would cash our check for us" -- heehee :rofl: ) We all had a good laugh at his expense.

I will give Winston Lucinda's and Tex's love - he will be happy to hear that they know about him. I think he was afraid I forgot about him. He won't let me out of his sight.

It hurts when he moves around and then hurts himself. It is a trick to get him in and out of the box so that he can pee and poop. And the poor face he makes when he tries to stand to poop breaks my heart. I just can't stand folks that hit animals and drive off without any concern. I lost my shit/malt (mix between a shiatsu and a maltese), Abbie, when someone ran her down and just kept going. I swore then it wouldn't happen to another of my dogs. :-( If it hadn't been for Katrina and my damned slow insurance company, this wouldn't have happened.

He is doing so much better -- he even seems to smile. :-)

:hi: How the hell are you? Are you doing okay? I have been sending out good energies for you, I know you had your own experiences thanks to the bitch, Katrina, and you had just located here! We old timers have had a time dealing with all of this, I know it hasn't been easy for newbies.

My trailer is very comfy! The trailer depicted in the photo in Maddy's post above is basically the style of my trailer. I am adjusting to the new "norms", I am just taking it all as it comes. Sometimes it is all so surreal. I think folks flock to Walmart to feel "normal" for a time, that area north of D'Iberville is humming. The 4 restaurants are always packed, the stores that are open are busy and I think the theater down the road is open. I am not crazy about shopping (never have been). I don't like fooling myself into thinking that things are normal, then coming home to the "new" existence. Maybe once I get the lot cleaned I will not mind it so much. That is my next challenge, getting the debris removed from my lot. I want that clean slate!

I was wondering about little Winston and his recovery.

Once he heals from this one, they will fix his other hip. He mainly sleeps and watches me. I can't wait for the day that he runs around. He is so cute, he runs full tilt with his tounge hanging out of his mouth. It looks like he could trip over it! :-)

I can't seem to get photobucket to work. If I could, I would post his photos. Maybe I can get it working and do that one day.

Hell, I wouldn't be able to drive anywhere without the Gulf as my landmark. How do folks that don't live along the coast know which way is South without the Gulf?

Most Katrina Survivors are doing all they know to do and that is -- Survive! I venture to guess you would do the same thing!

:hi: He had a tough night last night, he couldn't get comfortable and I think he holds going to the bathroom for as long as he can, it hurts he so to stand to do it. Then he is wearing one of those silly collars so he does lick or chew on his stitches and he gets caught up with that and well, it is very hard for both of us. :-(

He is on the mend, it is just a slow mend. All good things come in time, just have to patiently let them come. ;-)

I'd love to say I'm happy for you, but I think that smacks too much of barbara bush, and I don't think any of us are happy that you or your friends and neighbors are still going through that hell on a daily basis.

I'd probably feed the need to snark at them about leaving the attitude at home, since at least they have one.

But I'm glad to hear that you and Winston are doing OK.

put aside their "pride" and I am included in that number. Never before could I have imagined myself standing in line for so much, never before could I have imagined going through piles of clothes or boxes of supplies, taking handouts. Katrina took so much, now I am willing to accept the kindness of strangers and not allow my false pride to get in the way. Though our sense of pride has altered, we still have a sense of self and know that the visitor volunteers mean well, even if they have crappy judgment. Like I said, many of us waiting on our checks just laughed and thought of ways to irk the poor fellow. :shrug:

Winston and I are just pluggin along, trying to heal and rebuild. It won't happen overnight, but it will happen! :-)

Ya shoulda told the jerk that you fully intended to spend the money "wisely" on a pink garter belt and fishnet hose, since you'd never had any money and that's what you regarded as important. GEEZ!!!

When our daughter was a baby, husband, baby & I lived in a 14' trailer for several months while we rebuilt our home (no... not a disaster, we'd bought a little shack of a place and rebuilt it). It was sorta fun for awhile, but I was YOUNG then!

I am glad you at least have your very own front door!

I am quite sure that the BEST medicine for Winston's healing and recovery is being at home with you. Are the other little doggies still at brother's house, or home with you?

Remember.... you and I have a date someday to sit on the porch in rocking chairs with some margaritas or mint juleps and look back and laugh at 'the old days', when there used to be republicans!!

I can't wait to sit with you on the porch and remember "the old days" - we will just chuckle about the repukes' fake values and judgmental ways, how their hatred and false superiority did them in! :rofl:

Just so you and your neighbors know, your friends up North are thinking of you. My S.O. and I had a Mardi Gras party two weeks ago to raise money for everyone down on the Gulf Coast, and raised over $1200 (way more than we could have donated ourselves) - and that's 15 of our friends who all dug in and gave (most had already donated elsewhere.
