What is your choice for the best Western motion picture ever made
I have many favorites:
"Destry Rides Again"
"My Darling Clementine"
"Red River"
"The Gunfighter"
"Shane"
"The Searchers"
"Silverado"
"Pale Rider"
"Unforgiven"

But I think my all time favorite is, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."

19. no. you are right. Not a period western.
It is considered a modern-day western by many, and I think of it as one whenever I hear the name. When I look at the setting, the character names and traits, the cliquishness and circle the wagons mentality of the townsfolk, what I see is an updated western.

Nothing finer than Spencer Tracy's one armed character thoroughly kicking the ass of Ernest Borgnine's town bully character

24. I'm in the High Noon camp.
But I would have liked it even more if Gary Cooper had done it when he was a wee bit younger.

Still, you can't beat looking at Grace Kelly. Then Katy Jurado.
Wow, what a combo.

I will cop to paying six times to watch Dances With Wolves on the Big Screen.

Okay..... Silverado was sorta fun, too.

29. High Noon. Absolutely. No contest. The absolute greatest.
Now there's a western that exposes all the hypocrisy of the most pious among us, for all time. It's an absolute freakin' classic. But it's really more than just a movie; it's a meditation on who our real friends are.

Grace Kelly is the hottest woman on earth in this movie. And the Tex Ritter theme songs will linger with you for days. I learned how to play that song on my harmonica.

I absolutely LOVE this movie. I watch it at least once every couple of years.

26. "Red River"

Howard Hawks' masterpiece.

Recall John Ford's words about John Wayne, after he saw Wayne in the movie: "I didn't know the big sonovabitch could act!"

Runners-up: "Stagecoach," "The Wild Bunch," "Lonesome Dove," "Open Range."
