Is my washer dead or fixable?
All of sudden it isn't agitating or spinning, it will fill and drain but that is it. The thing is about 8 years old. Is it worth fixing? Any input is appreciated.

1. Sounds like the motor is worn out. Generally, dryers are worth
fixing, but cost-wise, get yourself a new washer and enjoy. The new one will be about the same, only it'll agitate. We can't have our agitators in disrepair. We need them up and running to nail the coffins in the repugs' coffin as they skewer themselves with their own actions. Can you feel the momentum building?

3. Gordon Jump is dead.
It just could be the belt that connects tub to motor broke or slipped off.It does not cost much to turn it over and look,I would replace the hoses in the back anyway since they are old.I repaired a 10 year old washer,I got a book from the library but the problem was on the floor when I tipped it over. There is a chain of appliance repair stores http://www.marcone.com and a chain for building maintainance http://www.grainger.com

4. It will cost you as much or more
to have an appliance repair person come out to your home (generally $65-85), and to order the new parts. Most washers aren't horribly expensive, and you can get a new warranty.

Meanwhile, look through these google sites...maybe there's hope yet...

5. sometimes it is just the timer in the dial. Hubby fixed mine and

it ran another 5 years.

Another thing that will make it not spin is the little switch thingy just under the lid that locks it for spinning. Cheap fix.

on edit: if you decide to buy one, look at the smaller front loader that is made by Sears and Frigidare. I love love love that washer.

There are some massively expensive front loaders, but this one is smaller, square, with no rounded panels or anything.

Sears has it in the store you can check it out.

This machine spins the water out so nicely you can often just hang stuff up; very energy efficient, uses much less water per load and it is vewy vewy quiet.

I have become a missionary for the front loader since I got mine.

6. Could it be...
... that the door interlock switch is not working? Most washers will not spin and some will not even agitate if they think the door is open.

Look around and see if you can see the switch. Or poke a pencil down in the hole (with the door open) while is "should" be agi/spinning and see if you can get it to start.

And fooey an anyone who says you should dump it at 8 years. A washer should go at least 12 and maybe 15!

7. Belts?
I know when the old bangers went out in the laundry room, it was belts.

If you end up having to get a new one, front loaders are the new black in washing machines-water and energy efficient and less hard on clothes

8. Thanks all!!
Turns out it was the switch that holds the lid closed during the spin cycle. It looked fine, but after I fiddled with it, the washer is working again!! I am so relieved, I have a house full of dirty laundry and I just replaced all the kitchen appliances a few months ago. I plan to replace the washer with a front loader soon, I'm just glad I don't have to do it this weekend.

9. UPDATE! Just spoke with my appliance repair son
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 11:01 PM by Whoa_Nelly
My son owns a home appliance repair business. I told him what your problem was, and he said it is probably a coupling...an easy fix, low cost part. So, get an appliance guy you trust out to your home and it should be an easy fix. My son says he does so many of those types of repairs, he usually has the part on his truck.
Good Luck!
