17. a trick for uncovering prime numbers:
First, write down a series of numbers, starting with the number 1.

Round One: Cross out the number 1.

Round Two: Mark the number 2. 2 is the smallest prime number. Now, starting at 2, cross out every second number. This eliminates multiples of 2.

Round Three: Mark the number 3. 3 is the first non-crossed-out number that you come to after Round Two, and is the next prime number. Now, starting at three, cross out every third number in the number sequence you wrote. This eliminates multiples of 3.

Round Four: Mark the number 5. 5 is the first non-crossed-out number you come to after Round Three, and is the next prime number. Now, starting at 5, cross out every fifth number. This eliminates multiples of 5.

Round Five: Mark the number 7, and cross out multiples of 7 as you did with the other numbers.

And so on.

It's called the Sieve of Eratosthenes.

19. one is not a prime number, because...
... a prime number is defined as a number that is the product of neither more nor less than two factors. 1 is its own sole factor.

20. oy
thanks.

I really need to dig out a maths book; I'm only vaguely remembering "product" and "factor" - but don't tell me. If I don't remember these terms, I need to go relearn them.

:hi:

21. For a moment I was impressed there
I thought it read prime ministers (I need to get showered and coffeed) - which would be impressive.

Sir Robert Walpole is commonly regarded as the first, but I can't go on from there.

22. Okay,
without looking at other peoples' answers, let's see how close I can come.

1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29

Those are the first 10 I think. How close am I?
