Did we grow up watching gay characters on TV?
http://www.theshorthorn.com/archive/2003/spring/03-apr-24/o042303-02.html

...For example, those little blue Smurfs were more homosexual than monogrammed “His & His” towels. With 100 guys and one girl (not counting the one under-aged female), it was only a matter of time before they started experimenting. They were always running around the village laughing and giggling. The Smurfs could not have been that happy without getting some sort of booty.

Then we have Peppermint Patty and Marcie of “Peanuts” fame. These two were the pre-breakup Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche of the cartoon world.

This animated duo was lesbian lovers before being lesbian lovers was cool. The way Marcie constantly worked for Patty’s approval, coupled with the way she referred to Patty as “sir,” signifies a typical femme/stud relationship. If that is not proof enough, both girls played for the female field hockey team. The sport of field hockey has probably attracted more lesbians than a three-for-one K.D. Lang CD sale.

...

If this gets deleted, I'll understand. I just think it's too hilarious not to post, and it can lead to a serious discussion that Pat Robertson would hate. :D

2. Anges Moorehead did! And a startling revelation or three...
Dick Sargent, Paul Lynde, Agnes Moorehead, how many in the cast were NOT GLBT?!

It's a fun show, to say the least...

13. I just saw Citizen Kane and Agnes was Kane's mother
it was so wild...I never realized that before!

She looked so puritan in comparison to her Endora Role...

11. Bewitched was a gay production period
Watching the shows now on Nick at Nite I can see what I may have only gotten subconsciously as a kid. It was the first show that took on gay issues though by using witches instead. It was a perfect analogy to being in the closet. Now Smallville is using much the same theme.

5. Are people always looking for the potentially gay?
I suppose that I understand it. Oppressed minorities are always looking for those of their own. For other categories, it is often more obvious. I know a number of Jews that point out notable Jews as well. For gays, I think that identifying others from the past who never came out or fictional characters that don't specifically self identify is more difficult. While gays may want to identify as many gay fictional characters, historical figures, and current celebrities and politicians who in the closest, stereotypes are often used that don't necessarily fit the context. On coming out day, a few years ago on my college campus, I saw this slogan scrawled on the sidewalks "Don't assume that I'm gay. Don't assume that I'm not."

9. And how about Perry Mason....
I saw a film of the premiere of "A Star Is Born" from '54 and there was Raymond Burr arriving with a very uncomfortable-looking SAILOR!!!
I used to watch P.M. every day, in fact, have all 271 episodes on tape (what a job that was!!!)
IMHO all the male stars were gay: William Talman, William Hopper was a flamer, and Ray Collins (fondly referred to as Lt. Fagg in our gay household). The only straight one was Barbara Hale, and she made it an iron-clad policy (no pun intended hahahahahahaha) to never lend her clothes to a cast member.
It's widely acknowledged that Raymond Burr was gay.
To the poster who wondered why we need to know this stuff: Well, when we get full equality and acceptence than it becomes a non-issue, but until then it helps us get through the day, often filled with loneliness and bigotry.

23. An aunt of mine dated Jim Nabors at University of Alabama
She pretty much confirms the story. Not that I care. I have a gay brother who is one of the most successful MDs in Atlanta. I like gays. I like bisexuals. Socially, my wife of thirty years and I love their company. We aren't fag-hags, but we cannot fill our need for sophisticated, erudite friends by excluding a very large class of very intelligent, well-read people. Our parties almost always include gay couples, usually of both sexes. Their parties usually include us, too.

14. James Whale, who directed the original Frankenstein
was gay. Vincente Minelli, Liza's dad, was gay. Jean Harlowe's first husband was gay. Laurence Olivier was bisexual. Ramon Novarro, who starred in the orignial "Ben Hur" was gay. He was murdered by two brothers who were male prostitutes.

Too many to count.

I think his name was Jody? Wasn't he the first regular gay character on a sitcom? I miss that show, it was so funny.
