Pet Posting Peeves II
Edited on Mon Oct-10-05 05:09 AM by ashling
I started to post this to the 'Pet peeves with posting' thread, but by the time I could get to it there were already a Brazillion posts, so I thought I would start PPP II as a public service and so that my pet peeve, which is obviously the most important:shrug: won't get lost in the pile. (hey at least I'm honest ...right?)

Here it is:

There are some people who post on DU who should be required to use spell check each and every time they touch the keyboard. I won't mention names - you know who you are . . . well, maybe you don't, but everyone else does!

Now, excuse me while I spell check this . . .

1. Man there's a programmer I work with
whose code is the untidiest I've ever seen. His indenting is never consistent, he mixes uppercase and lowercase at random, he cuts & pastes everywhere so that mistakes get replicated everywhere and his comments are absolutely riddled with spelling mistakes and typos! It drives me nuts!!
:hurts:

2. My pet peeve:
I would love to know approximately how many active members are involved with the DU. I know that a certain amount are tomb-stoned, and some ghost through on occasion for a little news. Others have left. I asked this question over in GD and some folks felt that we may have as few as a couple thousand actual active members. I hope this figure is WAY low, considering we have over 70,000+ who have registered over the years. In essence my pet peeve is this: I do not know how big our blog really is.

3. Just a gut feeling
but a few thousand active members sounds about right. I'm sure the vast majority of those accounts are either tombstoned, or are posters who only visit infrequently, or who made a certain number of posts and then left.

4. There are probably five to six thousand....
Casue a lot of people here don't post there...

Also, there are hundreds of people who almost never venture from their special interest posts....

6. Are you aware of any links to demographics...
...of prog blogs like ours... For instance how large are the others in comparison to DU, is Daily Kos bigger or smaller in active membership? What about Huffington Post, PDA, and etc?
It dawns on me that someone will warn me about their pet peeve: Thread Hijacking.... so I'll thank you ahead of time for any light you may be able to shed on those requested demographics.

7. They are hard to track....
Since, from my understanding, people some and go for dozens fo different reasons.....

Here and in other blogs.....

But this really isn't a blog...

It is really a chat room...

And since it is almost able to fund itself through individual donations, a lot of people are an awful lot about this site....

8. That's Odd.
I've always thought Thread Hijacking was highly encouraged! I remember one Dupe thread which reached 1111 post.

just sayin'

11. Another pet peeve I have
I figure I can have as many as I want since this IS MY THREAD!:) (even though it has been hijacked) is use of the term:

"just sayin' " at the end of a message.

"Just saying what? what they just said? isn't that sort of redundant?
Are they telling us that they actually said something, just in case we missed it? At the very least, it is kind of like putting a preposition at the end of a clause which is sort of like nails screeching on a blackboard.

just sayin'

:)

No, it is not the little mermaid, if you don't like the way I post - I'll just go away and not drag my nails across your mental blackboard.

18. I'm probably going to get it for this but...
...it bugs me when people end a post--especially a really short one--with "Discuss". As in:

George W. Bush might just be the worst president ever. Discuss.

It just bugs me.

Compare and Contrast George Bush and a bucket of warm feces.

Answer: The only difference is the bucket.

on edit: I would like to thank you and billyskank for actually responding to the subject of the thread!

10. Feel free to hijack my thread anytime
Edited on Mon Oct-10-05 07:51 AM by ashling
for the folllowing reasons:

1} I'm not proud. Hijack away . . . just don't ignore me . . . please (I have this fear of rejection); and

2) I may be moving back to Washington state soon (used to live in Tumwater) and I need to stay on good terms with the locals in the Pacific Northwet.

Just remember, size isn't everything .

5. Ouch!! This to me is sad. I want there to be much more!
I feel as though I just pulled back the curtain to reveal the real Wizard in the Wizard of Oz! I do hang here in the lounge a lot lately but I also get my news and have my news interpreted over in LBN and Greatest. I also get daily reports from Truthout and Media Matters. To me Democracy REQUIRES an informed and enlightened electorate. It is the DU which provides the valuable service of getting me much of that info and bringing me closer to enlightenment. I wish this were true for each and every American.
I feel sad that more folks do not see DU in this way.

9. Judging by the amount of fan mail I get weekly after my DU column...
The Blog Box--- is published each Friday morning, I think that "few thousand regulars" number is way low.

I get thousands of hits on my own blog via DU each week, too.

If my little column generates thousands of hits, imagine what numbers the "Top Ten Idiots" column must generate. That column was the reason I joined DU, BTW.

DU has made navigating news and commentary so much easier for us, too: LBN and Editorials & Other Articles are a major part of my daily news gathering ritual.

Where did this "couple of thousand" number come from, anyway?

17. I have seen "a few thousand" as a guesstimate more often than others but.
Edited on Mon Oct-10-05 09:03 AM by chknltl
As you can see here I have had a few other suggestions as to our actual active amounts. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=post&forum=105&topic_id=4129488&mesg_id=4994155 .
My goal in this request is in locating some kind of current active member tallies for all the progressive "chat rooms" and blogs. I wish to get a feel for the realistic reachable numbers here.

on edit I still do not have a good handle on the mechanics of cutting and pasting links here in the DU. The above link was supposed to go to my thread posted over in GD a few days ago. In summery I think the lowest figure was a snarky one but if memory serves, one person suggested the 'couple of thousand' number, I could be wrong there. On the other hand another poster had the figure much higher perhaps as much as 50 thousand. (again this is accdg. to memory) I meant to post this as a pet peeve, not as a thread hijacker. Which I am beginning to feel guilty about.

19. Okay, I doubt all "members" are equal
when I said "a few thousand," I was referring to regular denizens of the message forums. Regarding regular readers of the front page, I dare say that is a much higher number. Possibly much higher than the number of registered users, even. I was reading the articles on the front page for some time before I ever ventured into the forums. In fact I was drawn into the forums because in the old days, the latest posts from all forums were shown on the front page in a sidebar. That was changed a long time ago.
