So, I saw "Gummo" tonight
Edited on Mon Oct-10-05 10:59 PM by HEyHEY
I swear, Larry Clark doesn't make movies for any other reason than to be a fucking pedderass. Every single time I end up changing the channel after being creeped out by some scene.

Ugh... arrest that fucking perv.

5. It's a Harmony Korine film, not a Larry Clark film
Larry Clark wasn't involved, but Korine wrote "Kids".

And it is seriously fucked up. Not sure what my opinon on it is, aside from "fucked up".

7. I guess the creepiness and whatnot comes from Korine's writing...
And Korine like what the actors did with Kids, so decided to get them for Gummo.

9. Whatever you do don't watch "Ken Park"
that was too much even for my somewhat extreme tastes.

Harmony Korine's an interesting guy - he was the first American to make a Dogme film (Dogme #5 - Julien Donkey-Boy) and he followed that up by directing a David Blaine special. He also wrote the aforementioned Clark film Ken Park.

14. It was. I hadn't known that but checked IMBD and sure enough..
I watched "kids" in the 90's so I was curious about "bully" and "ken park" so i downloaded them both off of torrent sites last year. mr clark does seem to take an 'interest" in teens. :eyes:

but yeah...according to internet movie data base, "bully" was based on a true story:

11. Yeah, he's definitely an interesting guy...
I'm not sure what I think of him. On the one hand his films are so fucked up, even for my tastes, but they're at the same time farly interesting.

22. I think he's interesting enough to keep on watching
but yeah, I can't say I'm hugely enamoured of his work so far (though I loved Werner Herzog in Julien Donkey-Boy so I'll probably end up buying that).

But I'll always be grateful to Korine for an interview he gave back when Kids came out. He spent most of it raving about his hunt for a copy of the lost Jerry Lewis film "The Day the Clown Cried". I thought he was making it up, but no, it does exist ...

"It tells the story of a self-centered circus clown, Helmut Doork, who is sent to a concentration camp after a drunken impersonation of Hitler. There, he befriends the Jewish children of the camp, and performs for them, angering the camp Commandant.  He is accidentally sent with the children on a train to Auschwitz, and there, he is expected to lead the children, like a Pied Piper, to the gas chambers."
http://www.subcin.com/clowncried.html

And now it's one of the things I most want to see, ever. (Which at best, it seems, will only happen when Lewis pops his clogs.)

36. Well if you've seen Kids or Bully
Edited on Tue Oct-11-05 05:06 PM by Monkey see Monkey Do
you've got a sense of it already. It's about a group of teenagers, one is suicidal, one has an abusive father, one is sleeping with his girlfriends mother, etc. What distinguishes this from Clark's previous work is that there is the graphic nature of the sex (although to be fair not as much as some would-be censors would have you believe) and also the occassionally brutal violence. Although all the actors are over 18, they are playing younger parts and for me it teetered on what was really acceptable or necessary to be watching.

If you're open-minded (& I don't mean that in a derogatory sense) I'd recommend it. It's not a great movie, but it is quite interesting and there are some very good performances. It's certainly better than some of the recent films that use explicit sex (Baise-Moi, The Idiots, 9 Songs) but whether that's a reason for watching a film, I don't know.

---

on edit - I think you could probably get hold of this in a naughty internet kind of way. Be careful you're not getting the Asian release which has optical blurring of all genitalia, regardless of what they're doing. Failing that, I believe www.superhappyfun.com sells a DVD-R copy of it. Or you could import it from one of several European stores but you'd need to be able to play PAL (I've got the Russian DVD which is definately uncut).

18. Shut the fuck up, Donny
Haha, couldn't resist.

I'm not sure Gummo is about anything, really. But it's seriously fucked up.

From IMDb:
"Constructing this film through random scenes, director Harmony Korine abruptly jettisoned any sort of narrative plot, so here we go: Solomon and Tummler are two bored teenage boys who live in Xenia, Ohio. A few years ago, a tornado swept through it, destroying more than half the town and killing the same amount, including Solomon's father. The film, from there, chronicles the anti-social adventures these two boys have. These include sniffing glue, killing cats, having sex, riding dirtbikes, listening to black metal, and meeting a cavalcade of quirky, bizzare, and scary people. These include a man who pimps his mentally ill wife to our anti-heroes, three sisters who play with their cat and practice becoming strippers, a gay black Jewish midget and his boyfriend, a 12-year-old gay transvestite who is also a cat killer, Solomon's mother, two foul-mouthed six-year olds, and most importantly, a nymphlike skateboarder who walks around town wearing pink rabbit ears."

I saw it once and I can't get some of the images out of my head. I don't know what that means... was it good? Was it horrible? It's one of the few movies that has made something of a lasting impression without any real emotional connection for me. Do I love it.. do I hate it? Who can say?
