I declare war against Ohio State!

WHEREAS, the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines have an intense rivalry dating back many years;

WHEREAS, Michigan has always had the better football team;

WHEREAS, Michigan beat Ohio State in ice hockey on November 14, 2003, by a score of 4-0;

WHEREAS, Bush carried the state of Ohio in 2000, and that state has a Republican Governor and two Republican senators, while Gore won Michigan, a state that now has a hot chick Democratic Governor and two Democratic Senators;

WHEREAS, “Buckeye” is a weird name for a team, while “Wolverines” are tough, fierce animals;

WHEREAS, to get to Columbus, a Michigan resident should go south until they smell it, and east until they step in it;

WHEREAS, paying an Ohio State graduate for the pizza they just delivered has long been established as the only way to get him or her off one’s front porch;

WHEREAS, the most common question asked by Ohio State graduates is, “May I take your order?”; and,

WHEREAS, despite all of this, Ohio State thinks they’re better than Michigan.

THUS BE IT RESOLVED, that a state of war is hereby declared in this Lounge of the Democratic Underground, by the University of Michigan, its fans, its alumni, and so forth, against the Ohio State University, its fans, its alumni, and so forth, starting at 7:02 PM Eastern Standard Time this FIFTEENTH day of NOVEMBER, 2003, and concluding with the victory by the University of Michigan on November 22, 2003.

I accept your challenge, but what sort of "war" is this? Is the Lounge an appropriate venue for a war? We wouldn't want to damage anything.

I just ran this week's results thru my approximated BCS spreadsheet on Excel, and there is no doubt Ohio St controls its own destiny. The Buckeyes strength of schedule will vault them past USC and into the Sugar Bowl, with the little matter of a win in Ann Arbor.

It's amazing that Ohio St has been even more fortunate this year than '02. I completely respect the Buckeyes style of play and gutty escapes. But the outside help that has been required this year, and unfolded since the loss to Wisconsin, has been absolutely remarkable. My BCS spreadsheet indicates Miami had to lose TWICE to fall behind Ohio St, and the Buckeyes also needed the recent losses by FSU and Virginia Tech. Strength of schedule meant nothing without creeping within striking distance in the polls.

And the most ironic aspect is how flawed the BCS formula remains. All these upsets demonstrate how much quality and parity there is nationwide, yet the Buckeyes are in position to benefit because of an arbitrary formula that asserts strength of schedule is enough to trump the assessment of dozens of voters who prefer USC to OSU this season. I doubt there will be more than 5 or 10 voters in the two major polls who will place Ohio St above USC, even with a victory over Michigan.

But the outside help that has been required this year, and unfolded since the loss to Wisconsin, has been absolutely remarkable. And last year, while USC fans were screaming "strength of schedule" despite 2 losses, why is it not so important this year to you?
