Woohoo!!!! "Memoirs of a Geisha" trailer is finally out
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/memoirsofageisha/

I'm so excited about this movie but also extremely nervous they'll totally screw up the most amazingly beautiful book ever!!! (They totally shreaded another favorite of mine - "Cider House Rules")

So far the trailer looks amazing and the snippets that I've heard relate back to stuff found in the book.

:bounce:

I so can't wait for this movie to come out!!

2. What's amusing is the story is based in Japan but the 3 leading ladies....
are from China (Ziyi Zhang & Gong Li) and Malaysia (Michelle Yeoh)

10. I know! And Japanese and Chinese people do not look
Alike. I grew up with scads of Japanese-Americans, and now work around alot of Chinese, Taiwanese, etc.... nothing alike.

13. But at least in Kill Bill
They had the background story that she was half Chinese-American and half Japanese

Good looking out for them

21. Depends
I've met many blonde Italians. Seriously, I've never noticed a physical difference between the Chinese and the Japanese--when I'm in Japan, I can't pick out Chinese unless I hear them speak.

22. the eyes are often different
Though, there are exceptions, Chinese eyes are usually rounder, while Japanese are usually slimmer/narrower.

That's certainly not 100%, but I can usually tell between Chinese, Japanese & Vietnamese, though I sometimes have trouble with Korean vs Japanese.

24. I swear I've never noticed
Now I'm going to have to pay attention to the eyes. The language is usually what jumps out at me--Chinese sounds very distinctive.

27. Korean actually for me is one of the easiest ones to tell from everyone
else.

It's much more common for Koreans, especially men, to have a square chin and jaw compared with any other Asian nationality. Also prominent cheekbones. This may well have to do with proximity to Russia and crossing of bloodlines. An excellent example is Daniel Dae Kim from "Lost", he's one you'd peg as Korean from a mile away even if you didn't know his name:

Women often have some of these features as well especially the high cheekbones, whereas a "typical" Chinese woman's face is often more round in shape.

There are of course always exceptions.

25. There is a continuum though. People at certain ends of the spectrum
look alike.

For instance people from certain southern/coastal parts of China look just like people from Vietnam or other parts of Southeast Asia, small, dark complexioned. Some Chinese people look not dissimilar to Japanese.

So a lot of times you can "tell" by looking at someone. But not always.

My understanding is that in Japan the film has been received well and the Chinese actresses have not been an issue, but I can't verify.

11. I know!
This happens a lot. Like Lucy Lui in Kill Bill. I find it hard to believe that there are zero Japanese actresses available. (Although I'm a big fan of Gong Li).

16. Zhang Ziyi...
She had a few English lines in 'Rush Hour 2', but really hasn't spoken it extensively in a movie before that I know of?

Come to think of it, I don't think Gong Li has done much in English, either.

18. Nope. I think she was in Joy Luck Club in a small part.
No English. Zhang Ziyi was in House of Flying Daggers.

23. and, she had a supporting role in "Hero"
The Road Home was a good movie and had her in a starring role.

The literal title translation of "House of Flying Daggers" is something like "10 Sided Ambush" - quite a bit different than House of Flying Daggers.

15. is that as big a deal in Japan?
I know if it was a Chinese story & starred 3 Japanese actresses in the main roles, the Chinese would not be happy... to put it mildly. I sometimes tease my wife that the Chinese Emperor in the Disney movie "Mulan" is voiced by Japanese actor Pat Morita. (we watch Mulan all the time because my 2 1/2 year old daughter loves it!)

31. I suppose it's payback for the fact that the lead actors in
Flower Drum Song (1961 movie of Broadway musical about Chinatown) were Miyoshi Umeki, Jack Soo (real name Suzuki), Reiko Sato, and James Shigeta, the first a Japanese and the other three Japanese-Americans. Other cast members included Juanita Hall (African-American), Patrick Adiarte (Filipino-American), and Nancy Kwan (half-Chinese, half-English). ;-)

5. Sorry no - they turned Candy & Homer's relationship into something cheap
I thought Charlize Theron was poorly cast as Candy and somehow the movie turned into Cheap Sex between them instead of this longing & guilt & sadness that was written into the book.

it was so depressing. I pitied the little girl because her life was so sad. I don't know if the movie would be any better or not.

I just saw the film poster for it, when we went to the theater last week. Dh reminded me, I still needed to read the book. LOL!

I hope they don't destroy what I've heard was a wonderful book.
