SNL thread- wow.
The beginning was worthy of DU, even. It was RADICALLY anti-Bush. I had never heard anything like this before in the mainstream media. While the audience seemed downright dumbstruck by it's frankness, it was nonetheless an amazing piece.

5. The guy was playing Bush
describing to the American public how the new Iraqi government was going to be set up....he was being very descriptive, more or less saying that it would be entirely corrupted and even more of a terrorist state that it was before- "the Iraqi people will be even worse off than before we went in"....and such...I mean, it was through-and-through anti-Bush...it wasn't even funny, hardly anybody laughed...it was so political, pure criticism....they were just sticking it to his ass. While satirical, it was brutal, the worst I've ever heard about Bush on TV, ever.

14. Is this what he said? My BIL sent it to me.
Bush giving a talk about the new Iraqi Constitution.

Three branches:

The Executive branch is led by the "Dictator", who controls secret police
and media to crush all dissent.

The Legislative branch consists of a lower house, elected every 2 years
in sham elections, and an upper house, elected every 5 years in sham
elections.

The Judicial branch conducts rigged show trials of the regime's critics.
The Dictator can overrule their torture if he thinks his is more painful.

The Minister of Education is responsible for secret chemical weapons
programs. The Foreign Minister is responsible for getting them into
the hands of terrorits.

Iraqis are confident they can have a new dictator in place by August,
even allowing for a long bloody power struggle.

The constitution is not all we hoped for, but it enjoys nearly universal
support from the Iraqi people.

Even if the Iraqi peiople are much much much much worse off than they
were before, I don't regret Operation Iraqi Freedom one bit. It took
people's mind off the economy, and I got to land on an aircraft carrier.
And it gave us valuable exprience in case we need to go into Syria,
Iran, or North Korea -- which we're definitely going to do.

Live from New York, it's Saturday Night.

7. I forgot-
a lot of it was more or less supposed to be an ironic criticism of Bush because he's doing the same things in the United States- using Congress as a "rubber stamp," etc.....many, many things. If you can find a transcript, definitely read it. It was unbelievable, really, seeing this on TV.

12. Impressions do not "work" unless the deliverer is dead on..
Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 02:39 AM by SoCalDem
That's what made Carvey and Ferrell so good.. I feel sorry for Darrell.. He IS Cheney and he WAS Clinton.. To make him to Bush, is a slap in the face to US.. He's bad at it, it's not funny, and it does not work.. They might as well have had anyone come out, sit on a stool and read from the script.. The resluts would have been the same..

I cannot believe that a show as big as SNL cannot go out and find SOMEONE who does a GW impression..

SNL has not been "edgy" or consistently good in 20 years..

13. The material wasn't meant to be funny.
It was satirical, but not silly. It was supposed to make a very serious point. No one was laughing because it was cutting very deeply into the Bush administration.
