Poll question: About that play in the ALCS last night..Was the ball caught? Or did it hit
the ground?
I've been watching sports talk shows all morning and from the footage I've seen, the catcher caught the ball cleanly.
Batter OUT!
Blown Call!

1. He was out like a light.
The manager of both teams should tell their catchers to tag the batters on strikeouts!

2. High school catcher would have tagged him out either way.

4. But the Ump gave the "out" gesture, which prompted the fielders to
leave their positions and go back to the dugout.
Blown call that affected the outcome of a playoff game.

5. That ump has been interviewed
And he basically said that he needs to change his umping "style".

In my book, right fist up = out.

6. exactly- fundamentals...the catcher screwed up big time.
the ball obviously hit the dirt- you can see it change direction.

7. No dirt came up. It was a clean catch. I used to be a catcher and
if a ball comes scraping the ground you would see dirt being raised. All glove.
Plus once the ump gives the clenched fist gesture, its an out!

10. if you used to be a catcher-
then you should also know that a good catcher always tags the batter out on a third strike- even when it's a totally clean catch...like i said- f-u-n-d-a-m-e-n-t-a-l-s...the catcher(and the team and the fans) have no one to blame but himself.

8. Why?
Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 02:15 AM by Oeditpus Rex
If Paul caught it cleanly, why make the tag too? All that does is make Eddings think the ball was in the dirt.

On edit: 756! I just passed Hank Aaron! :woohoo:

11. it's what good catchers do-
just so there's no confusion. a lot of "fans" aren't even aware of the dropped/in the dirt third strike rule.

3. Even Ozzie Guillen wouldnt comment on that play.
When the manager of the opposing team refuses to comment on the most controversial play in baseball since Steve Bartman catching the fly ball in the Cubs playoff game, you KNOW something is fucked up.

12. Check out this pic from today's tribune, did it bounce, was it trapped?

Paul thought he had caught the ball. He did not hear Eddings say he had not caught the ball.

"If you watch it," Eddings said of the replay, "the ball changes direction, so I don't see how you guys can say it's clearly a caught ball."

Said umpire supervisor Rich Reiker: "We've looked at it in the truck. We've blown it up. I'm sure some of you have seen that angle. We have some technology, and Jerry Crawford saw it also, the whole crew, and there was definitely a change in direction there.

"At this point I would say at best that it's inconclusive. I wouldn't totally agree that the ball was caught, but there was a change in direction that we saw."

The ball hit the ground first and then went into his glove? "Yes," Reiker said.

13. the change of direction thing cracks me up
could it have been because it was in a moving catcher's mitt?

there's no way those umps could have seen that with the naked eye that far away if slowed down video and pictures can't even make the determination clear.

They blew it, I just wish they'd admit it so we can move on.

14. I vote ---- IT DOESN'T MATTER
Look, regardless of weather the call was good or bad, the ump did not steal second base and the ump did not pound an 0-2 meatball into the left field wall for a game winning RBI double.

THIS PLAY PUT A MAN ON 1st WITH 2 OUTS. IT DIDN'T SCORE A RUN AND IT DIDN'T TAKE AWAY AN ANGEL'S RUN.

Who knows what would have happened in extra innings, but it's not Doug Eddings fault that the Angels didn't apply a simple tag and couldn't make one more out.

Just my unbiased opinion. ;-)
