1. Oh, just serve. It won't kill you.
And you most likely won't be seated on a jury.

Innocent people get sent to their deaths in this country, or get sent to prison for life, over POT.

It is up to us to stop it.

Jury duty is no laughing matter.

Thanks,

Floog

25. Edited post above:
I was never called for jury duty because I was a journalist . . . but I would have gladly served. I've known people who ended up in prison because their jury was comprised of "letter of the law" folks who gave no thought to the "spirit of the law," and I don't think justice is confined to judges, lawyers, etc. We the people are central to the cause of justice.

Sorry. I so strongly believe in this that it makes me ranty.

3. Nope. That is why they call it "duty."
It is a part of citizenship. Remember?

Don't even try to get out of it.

You might end up saving someone's ass, or saving their life, or doing justice.

These people in court ARE AT THE MERCY OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND UNLIKE YOU IN THIS COUNTRY.

Get your shit together and do it. It is the ultimate.

Don't you ever watch the movies? I can't believe this.

Thanks,

Floog

16. Doesn't work here
The only time I got as far as voir dire, there was a question that prompted me to say I was a working journalist. I was later excused, but for some other reason. I think they just got their 12, and I was one of those left hanging.

That said, I'd rather embrace the opportunity to watch first-hand the system at work.

6. My friend avoided it by showing up and being totally honest...saying
that she has no faith in the justice system, that she knew someone who was unfairly prosecuted and that thousands of innocent people are in jail for things they did not do. And that the justice you get is determined by how expensive of a lawyer you can hire. And.... she was dismissed.

These folks were so wrapped up in a contrived act of deception -- it utterly backfired. I think the public are not so troubled by an act of deception by the Administration than by an act of decepetion clumbsily executed. To execute it as badly as they did, is truly worrisome. 7. The one time I was called in for jury duty
Edited on Fri Oct-14-05 12:38 AM by Whoa_Nelly
When asked if I had any objections to serving, I answered, "I don't trust the cops here. I think they lie."

I was excused.

I was only 19 years old and very naive at the time, and had been harrassed by the cops in the little town where I was living...sexually harrassed. Sure, I was a dancer hippie chick (the early '70s) wearing short short cutoffs that were also slit up the side and halter tops, but that seemed to be OK with the asshole cops who thought it was fun to stop me and act like they had business with me.

It was my special little get back time that day in court :)

15. LMAO! A friend of mine got out in a similiar fashion
I thought she was exaggerating...

She said she told them she mistrusts cops, the justice system, the legal system, doesn't believe in the death penalty or capital punishment.

She said it seemed they couldn't wait to get rid of her! She said the bailiffs and others on the jury looked at her 'uneasily'. She happily walked out!

I think we must be two peas in a pod in this thread when it comes to the seriousness of jury duty.

I think, however, Bliss didn't mean it as seriously as I reacted and I have apologized. You really have a way with words, Heidi, and I think your posts in this thread go a long way in educating people and making them think about the importance of the jury system, which can ultimately be our last wall of protection.

As usual,

The paperwork I had to fill out asked if any of my family were in jail or something like that. I can't remember the exact question. One of my brothers was in jail at the time. I answered yes. I was released in the first bunch, never asked any questions except the paperwork. Never been called again. I find that curious. If that was the reason, it's bullshit.
