Satellite TV: need some help
Thinking about cutting the cable and going dish.
Want two receivers so Miz t. and I can watch different channels.
Have 5 TV sets on cable now (I know, I know:shrug:).
How does this work?
Can we watch different programs on ANY 2 TVs?
Or do we run one receiver to 3 sets and the other to the remaining 2 sets?
If I'm watching one program on one set, can all the other sets be receiving the same program?
Any opinions on whether DirecTV or Dish Network is better deal?
Thanks.

1. To the best of my knowledge
You can hook up more than one tv to a receiver using a splitter but the one receiver controls both sets. You couldn't watch two different channels. I think an extra receiver with separate programming costs a few dollars a month.

As for which is best, I'm still debating that. I've had DirecTv for about 7 years and now that Murdoch is in the process of taking it over I'm seriously looking at DISH but I haven't made the switch yet.

4. Modulators
http://www.multiplextechnology.com/channelplus/newproducts/5500.html

We have 2 Direct-tv receivers with UHF remotes that feed 6 tvs. One set of outputs go to main tv other set to Channel plus modulator. It converts to unused channel (broad cast or cable) and splits to other tvs. Ours is old and combines the stereo but new ones pass stereo on.
RF signal gives good picture for other smaller tvs up to 25".

And aren't the satcos having serious financial troubles?

Wouldn't want to get service by someone going out of business or in a leveraged buy out.

7. It's eeeeeeeeeasy & saves $5 per extra receiver each month.
If you can hook up a cd player you can do it. Directv and Dish charge $5 per month per receiver. Mine paid for itself in 7 months

6. OK, does it work like this?
Receiver 1 is hooked up to TVs A & B.
Receiver 2 is hooked up to TVs C, D,&E.
TVs A & B can watch at the same time, but it would have to be the same channel.
Same for TVs C, D, &E.
Now...
Could TV A tune in to the program being received by TV C (receiver 2)?
Or are the TVs more or less hard wired to one receiver?

Thanks for your help.

9. Answer to specific question
Q: Could TV A tune in to the program being received by TV C (receiver 2)?
A: TV A must watch whatever is on Receiver 1 unless you have some sort of switch box.

I could see putting both receivers in the same physical location and feeding either signal to TV A. You would need a switch box where the receivers are. You would need UHF RF remotes, not infrared remotes if you wish to tune the channels from other rooms.

10. One would need to run video+audio cables around the house
Unless you used an RF modulator like the other posters did.

Note that if you use an RF modulator, you will lose screen resolution. RF/TV is only about 350 lines of resolution. Dishnetwork is 500 or 600 lines of resolution. Half the reason I got Dishnetwork was to get a better picture. (I moved and switched back to cable).

..........
What you are trying to do seems all very ambitious. Cable tv would be so much simpler if you can deal with their programming package and rates.

Dish gouges you on rates when you start adding additional receivers. $5/mo just to have a second, third, fourth receiver is a ripoff.

11. Right right right
Our two receivers are connected directly to our best tvs for highest picture resolution. The 2nd set of line outputs on the Direct receivers feed the modulator that converts it to RF and adds local broadcast signals from antenna and then feeds the existingcoax distribution in the house. It is good enough for my kitchen, shop, and other rooms.

12. Cost is one factor.
The dish with two receivers is less than what I'm paying for digital cable now.
Plus, there are a lot of channels our cable doesn't carry, like Comedy, C-span 2, etc.
We've already got coax running to all the TVs for cable and I assume we'd use the same to hook up the dish receivers.

14. Dish has a great offer right now.. We are going to get it
Call their toll free number.. They were very helpful when I dcalled..

They have a deal now for 4 receivers.. full packages.. and recordable DVD thingie/receiver for no extra charge.. and with local channels.. and it's less than adelphia..

and we would get some liberal channels.. now we don't get any.. I will be very happy to turn in my cable junk and tell them they are losing that money every month because I don't like their politics..

:)

16. I Like DISH
Dish Has Free Speech TV and World Link - for some alternative news sources to our corporate media whores

Plus Comcast doesn't support CSPAN - when CSPAN contracts come up for review in certain areas, they cancel contracts with CSPAN.

Also, if you order Dish ask about getting a Free Digital REcorder - they were offering that last month - it's their version of TIVO. Plus you get 3 receivers -
