What is the greatest football game of all time?
Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 09:21 AM by VermontDem2004
My vote goes to the 1930 matchup when the Los Angeles Fire Department defeated Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks 31-6.

2. The Boston College - Miami game
When Flutie threw the "Hail Mary" pass to Gerard Phelan in 1984!

We were having dinner in a restaurant in Concord, MA, and could see into the bar where they had the game on tv. Practically the whole place erupted when that pass was caught. That has to be one of the finest moments in college football history. (At least for BC fans.)

If I remember correctly it was the day after THanksgiving.

6. Oh I'm sure there were many better games
I'm not a big football fan. I happened to see this game so that's why I mentioned it.

Actually most of that year was great for BC. The way Flutie scrambled around was amazing.

So I'm sure there are good head-to-head, momentum swinging games that could rate higher.

7. As a Wisconsinite non-football fan...
...which is sorta like being an atheist in the bible belt, I don't know for sure which was the best.

But we're told every year about the "ice bowl". Heard about it so many times, it's gaining the status of Creation Myth. I think it's actually in the Wisconsin Synod Lutheran Bible by now.

Evidently it was this game that was played when the temperature was close to absolute zero. All the superfluid helium creeping out of the helium balloons was causing these quantum-mechanical effects or something. I don't know, I usually tune it out when people start talking about it.

The Ice Bowl was the 1967 NFL Championship game between the Cowboys and the Packers. I'm still in trauma.

It was -13 degrees that day with a wind chill in the -40s. The cold was bad enough but somehow by accidental coincidence the heaters at the stadium went out - but only on the Cowboys' side of the field. And then they miraculously came back on after the game was over. Gee...I believe that was purely coincidental. :eyes:

The Cowboys fell behind early but came back to lead 17-14 late in the fourth quarter. The Packers ended up winning it on a QB sneak at the end of the game.

Jack Mildren vs Jerry Tagge

Johnny Rodgers, Jeff Kinney, Rich Glover, Larry Jacobsen

don't remember who OU had at Running Back - but their wishbone was awesome (but, thankfully, just a hair shy of Nebraska's offense)

Seriously. A fantastic game. A rematch of the championship game the year before. 4 overtimes I think. My best friend's Dad played at CN and I asked him about it last year he said he still hasn't gotten over it.

Two years ago the UVa-Ga.Tech game was fantastic too. My wife and I went to it, UVa won on a hook-and-lateral they hadn't practiced since the first week of spring ball. It was easily in the top 5 games I've ever seen on TV or not. This one wasn't on TV which added to the back and forth flow of the game.

Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 11:05 AM by rasputin1952
but for the "best game of all time", (to include the entire game, as well as who you saw it with and all around expectations), I would have to say Superbowl III, Jets/Colts. Even the more mundane moments kept fans on the edge of their seats. The whole thing was electric, and made for the future of post season football.

:bounce: BTW: I was for the Jets, and I was not disappointed!

edited for a stupid mistake in format

14. Of the games I was personally present for
I'd have to go with the South Albany vs. West Albany game of 1976, when Kelly Luther hit Wade Starbuck with a 90 yard touchdown pass in the game's final minute to pull out a 13-10 victory, mostly because of the stirring -30 yard drive South put together to require that the winning play cover 90 yards.

Runner up would be Linfield (naturally) over Pacific Lutheran, 35-33 in the 1988 matchup. PLU dominated the game, but Linfield came back with a series of improbable big plays.

Third on the list, because I wasn't there, would be Linfield's 33-22 victory over Northern Iowa in the 1984 NAIA Division II title game, in which Linfield trailed 22-0 midway through the third quarter.

Fourth, which I was there for, would be the 1978 NAIA Division II playoff game which Linfield lost to California Lutheran (what is it with these Lutherans?!) 29-28, blowing a 28-10 fourth quarter lead.

in first sudden death overtime game. This game really brought a lot of attention to pro football and began its start as the dominant team sport of the US.Also brought a lot of attention to the then obscure Johnny Unitas, making him the gold standard of QBs for years to come.

17. 49ers v. Cowboys, 1979 National League Championship
with Dwight Clark and "the Catch." Joe Montana had 4 minutes, and he was back near their 10 yard line. Then Mr. Ice in His Veins drove the Niners down the field, and it all culminated in Clark's catch. Stunning.

41. Maybe we should mention the Miami-Dallas Thanksgiving game
When the Cowboys blocked the potential winning field goal, only to have Leon Lett chase down the still-spinning football at the goal line, muff it, and the Dolphins recovered in the end zone and won in the most impossible finish since Herman Edwards at the Meadowlands.

Nah, I like VelmaD; I won't mention that game at all.

49. Yup....
After the catch Ed "Too Tall" Jones told Montana, "You've just beaten America's team." Montana replied, "Well then, you can sit at home with the rest of America and watch the Super Bowl."

Unbelievable game- the one thing most people don't remember, though, is that the Cowboys almost came back again. I forget the 49er safety that did it, but a Cowboy receiver was on his way for about a 70-yard touchdown when he was caught only by an ankle and tripped up. That one ankle-grab won the game.

Edited on Mon Nov-17-03 06:28 PM by kodi
"The Heidi Game featured five lead changes and a dizzying show of aerial acrobatics. Namath passed for 381 yards and a touchdown, Lamonica for 311 yards and four touchdowns. Maynard caught 10 passes for 228 yards. The game also included 19 penalties for 238 yards."

and if you gotta ask, you weren't watching it, or later, Heidi.
