Insight on a candidate
It can be hard to find information on local candidates, but Steve Kilpatrick's many letters to local newspapers clue us into his views.
On March 27, 2005, Kilpatrick complains about businesses using temporary signs. He wants the city to clear our right-of-ways of these signs, which he calls "littering." Funny that I now see his political signs on public property all over town
Kilpatrick's Feb. 13, 2003, letter is a diatribe against the government. He complains that lawmakers are not consistent with his "Christian" beliefs. His problem? They spend too much money. He doesn't want to see unemployment benefits expanded during hard times. Funny, but I thought Jesus suggested helping people who are less fortunate.
He wants to eliminate taxes on dividends and interest income. People who work for a living should pay taxes, but fat cats living on stock portfolios should get a free ride from taxes?
He goes on to complain about Medicaid spending. Is one of Kilpatrick's "Christian" values that poor people deserve to die if they get sick?
Dec. 26, 2002, Kilpatrick's letter shows his theocratic intentions. He decries "evil judges" and wants our society cleaned up to his standards. He goes so far as to call for a "Constitutional Convention," a code word for the overthrow of our government. He wants to eliminate free speech, and for the government to decide what we may do in the privacy of our bedrooms. He ends the letter blaming all of the society's ills on TV and "smut" in stores.
His Nov. 26, 2002, letter is on the "meaning" of Thanksgiving. Is Thanksgiving in the Bible, because he bemoans K-mart for being open? "I was filled with glee when the biggest commercial abuser of this day was forced to declare bankruptcy last year ... God will show them who is boss!" I guess God follows the retail market closely.
In short, Steve Kilpatrick's letters show he is a zealot who would like to control every aspect of your personal life. To him, smaller government means no help for people who fall on hard times. Please vote against him in the Nov. 8 election for city council at-large.

Did I mention that I can't stand this guy? He is personally responsible for the local advertising paper not taking my business, as well as a couple of the radio stations in town.
I'll be watching my back over the next few weeks.
