Daniel Craig takes on 007 mantle

14 October 2005

Actor Daniel Craig has been confirmed as the new James Bond.

The English star of gangster film Layer Cake, who arrived at a press conference in London by speedboat, will play a tougher, grittier and darker 007.

"It's a huge challenge. Life is about challenges and this is one of the big ones as an actor," said Craig, 37, who will be the sixth James Bond.

He joked he "had a couple of Martinis" when he got the role. Casino Royale is due to start filming in January.

I'm sorry, this guy just doesn't do it for me. Maybe it's time to just retire the character?

1. Anyone get the feeling this 'tougher, grittier' stuff means they
hired Frank Miller to completely rewrite and restart the character? I mean they're going all the way back to Casino Royale! Might as well call it

James Bond: Year One

2. He is a much darker character in the books.
Particularly after Blofeld kills Bond's wife. He's basically unafraid of death; he almost welcomes his own destruction.

3. Fair enough, but I get the feeling like the studio execs saw the
box office receipts from Batman Begins and decided to follow suit. This way they can redo the entire series, only sticking closer to the books.

It's not necessarily a bad thing (jury's out til I watch the thing), I just question they're motivation.

4. Much more interesting character in the books
Ian Fleming always said that Bond was, at his core, a killer.

5. I was hoping for Julian McMahon
I've had a man-crush on him since Nip/Tuck first came on the air. And he has a TV thing with the smokin' Alyssa Milano on Charmed.

6. I'm not crazy about Daniel Craig, either.
He's not that good, IMHO.

Also, this is the first James Bond who is younger than I am.

And that's bad.

7. Like I said before, anybody's gotta be better than Pierce Brosnan.
I couldn't stand him as Bond.

8. That sucks.
Why didn't they just go dig up George Lazenby? It would have been about as good.

That is about all I have to say on it.

9. I know I'm a heathen, but I really liked Lazenby. True, Connery played
the part the best, but Lazenby seemed like he thought the whole thing was silly. I appreciated that attitude, especially after the films started to turn into little more than gadget movies.

10. He was great in "Sylvia"
Damn, after that movie, I'm not sure even Ted Hughes could top that performance.

11. Yep, he was.
I just watched it the other night.

He's freaking hot. Those eyes! I reserve judgment until I see his performance. But CA'S right-- the first Bond younger than me. Not a good thing.

12. Yes - and he was stunning with dark hair.
He doesn't even look like the same person with blond hair. Nothing against blonds, I happen to be one, but it just doesn't suit him or the role.

13. i think he'll do a fine job.
He was good in Layer Cake.

And for those who are saying "they're just redoing the series", Casino Royale has never been made as a serious Bond flick (however, the spoof with Peter Sellers and all the luminaries is well worth watching...)
