That's not a movie man, that's a test pattern
Oh man, my wife told me she has never seen a test pattern. That can't be she's only four years younger than me, I downloaded a picture of a pattern to show her, and nope can't say she ever saw one. Many late nights the familiar indian head and steady drone have kept me company, but with cable tv and 24/7 programming it's another memory, along with pull rings on beer cans, and church keys.

2. I remember the test pattern
Since I grew up in Champaign, IL, I assumed the Indian was
Chief Illiniwek, the mascot of the University of Illinois. I was surprised in later years when I found out it was used elsewhere. Anyone know who designed the test pattern? Why is the Indian there?

3. There's a suprising number
of sites with information on tests patterns, there were several of them in use. The only one I remember though is the indian head.

4. The test pattern was the first thing we watched as kids...
on Saturday morning waiting for programming to resume. Colonel Bleep was the first program of the morning, and if I remember correctly, the program started with a countdown that actually used a test pattern.

Listen here

And now, stand by for adventure...Three, Two, One...

5. Ah, yes, the test pattern.
Does anyone else remember the line in a Cheech and Chong routine where one of them goes to the other's apartment and ask, "Hey man, what's up?" and the other replies, "We're watching an Indian movie, but is it DULL!"

My husband, who is five years younger than I am, had never seen the Indian test pattern, and never got the joke until I explained it to him.
