Whose speaking voice could you listen to all day?
Edited on Sun Oct-16-05 08:27 PM by Left Is Write
(Speaking voice as opposed to singing voice)

A couple of my favorites are William Hurt and Kevin Spacey.

I got to thinking about this tonight while watching VH-1's top 100 One Hit Wonders, and a few of the interviews were done with the English Beat's Dave Wakeling. He's got a fabulous speaking voice.

edited to take extra "p" out of "top."

1. James Earl Jones.
Vin Scully - I wish he could broadcast EVERY game. Well...1/2 of them. Ernie Harwell can do the other half.

43. He is the only reason to watch Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
Sheriff: “I'm gonna cut your heart out with a spoon!”
Guy: “Why a spoon, cousin? Why not an axe, or...”
Sheriff: “Because it's dull, you twit, it'll hurt more!”

This sounds like Bush.

The sheriff speaking to one of his lackeys
"Raise the bounty on Robin Hood another 500 gold coins."

"Begging your pardon sir, raining the bounty won't do no good. The poor people they love him."

"Let me get this straight, He steals from me making me raise taxes on the poor and THEY LOVE HIM FOR IT!"

The lackey nods his head..

"Fine no more table scraps for widows and orphans, No more merciful beheadings.. AND CALL OF CHIRSTMASS!"

Even though he was often telling the most outrageous lies in the world, he would do so with a calm and soothing voice. It was really amazing.

I sincerely believe he should replace Bob Ross on that PBS "Joy of Painting" show:

The president feels that it would be prudent at this time to paint a happy little cloud right here.

(although the HBO guy IS good). That other fella could make your spine tingle just reading the menu at McDonald's. "The bovine hoardes wander the frozen tundra, seeking grass to carry them through the bitterness of winter. And far away, in a place that is always sunshine, I order a Big Mac: two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce. Cheese. Pickles. And a sesame seed bun for the ages." All with that stirring martial music going in the background.

45. I'm serious -Bill Clinton
Somehow his voice always had a reassuring and comforting dimension to it that made me want to listen to more of what he had to say. I could sit through a whole speech by Clinton and feel mesmerized by his style and tone of speaking as well as by what he had to say. This is in contrast to *, whom I have to turn off whenever I even here the first syllable of whatever he's saying because his speaking voice annoys me as much as his rhetoric

47. There's a presenter on B.B.C. Radio 3 - Jonathan Swaine
He sometimes does "Through the night" which runs from about midnight to 7a.m. - if I get a dash of insomnia there's little quite so soothing as his voice gently announcing various pieces of gorgeous music. His other main programme is on during the day - he alternates with another presenter who has possibly the most irritating voice.

Also Richard E. Grant.

67. Did you see Sir Elton on Inside the Actor's Studio last night?
It was a very interesting interview. He was warm and friendly and real open about his past drug/alcohol problems. He also played a lot of his songs and even made up a song on the spot from some lines from Peer Gynt (he said he could put anything to music and challenged the audience to give him a book -- a student came up with his copy of Peer Gynt which Elton used).

The only thing weird thing was he was wearing this really long white shirt (it came to his knees) that was really distracting. It looked like he had an apron on under his suit jacket.

60. Jon Conyers...
...barring that, Jimmy Carter. They both have a soft spoken deliberateness to the way that they speak. I also love the warm tone in Katherin Lamphor's (sp?) voice. Sadly she is now gone from the Al Frankin show. Part of my thinking here includes "what" they would likely say. If I am to listen "all day", then this becomes important to me. Carl Sagan, if he were alive today, would make another fine choice for me, for the same reasons.

I was going to say that exactly, but you said it first. I have two of his CDs, "Songs of the Cat" and "Now It is Christmas Again" -- I love them both, although he does more talking in the Christmas one and it's just so warm and cozy. :)

86. my own personal idiosyncrasy
Christian Slater. "Heathers" and "Pump up the Volume" are in my top 20 favorite movies. PUTV introduced me to Leonard Cohen's music, and I will forever be grateful for that.

I also had a thing for the way Christian licked his lips in his early films. :loveya:

Speaking of Leonard Cohen, if his speaking voice is like his singing voice, then he gets a vote, too.

To be the boss of Darth Vader, the voice has to be pretty deep and bad ass.

I would also agree with those mentioned already, Anthony Hopkins, Alan Rickman, Ian McKellen, and I will raise a Jack Nicholson.
