I need PC help, QUICK!
Ugh, I REALLY hate computers.

Last week I downloaded Winamp, went to watch a few videos and found out that it was my default movie player. SO every MPEG file loaded into the winamp player. Anyway, I wasn't using it for anything and wanted my old MPEG player back (Windows Media Player) so I took it off my system.

NOW when I go to open an MPEG file I get an error message that reads: "c:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\4NKNCDUH\MPEG001<1>.MPEG" The specified path does not exist.

Check path and then try again.

HOW the hell do I get it to load my MPEG movie back into Windows Media Player?

1. there are a few ways to do it..
you could just re-install windows media player.. which would change your file associations back to wmp as a default.

or you could do it manually, which is a pain to explain but i will if you want.

2. when you run windows media player

I believe it does a check to see if it is the default movie player.

If yours doesn't, download the newest version from microsoft and when you install, it does give you the option of making it your default mpeg, avi, etc. player.

5. I hate computers too
Which Windows OS is it?

You need to go into FOLDER OPTIONS and select the FILE TYPES tab. Look for the multimedia extension MPG, highlight it (click on it), and click the CHANGE button and then select Windows Media Player.

If you have the install file, reinstall Windows Media Player. It'll reset the file assocatiom but you'll have to reboot.

You could also try manually altering the registry... :scared:

6. Control Panel
It might depend on your O/S, but try this:

Start>Settings>Control Panel then click on Add/Remove programs.

Click on "Set program access and defaults."

Under "choose a default media player" click on Windows Media player.

8. Did you download the infamous Winamp3?
Edited on Mon Nov-17-03 08:52 AM by RatTerrier
What a terrible, bloated piece of software!

I treid it, then deleted it. I currently use Winamp 2.91. Takes up very few resources, and is pretty lean. I like it better than WMP, which is slow as molasses in some cases. Winamp2X is a great media player that was screwed up with the soon-to-be-defunct Winamp3. Keep an eye open for the Winamp5 series, which I am a little sceptical about (I've heard of a lot of AOL influence in this one).

Whenever I install a media player, I go through each file format to specify what I want it opened with. I use Winamp for some video files, WMP for a few and the dreaded QuickTime for .MOV files. I still have yet to reinstall RealOne, but that time is to come soon :( .

For anyone else with the problem described, I believe you can change the properties pretty easily with XP. It's just a right-click away.

Or just reload WMP if worse comes to worse.
