Knitters: I have a stupid question. Please school me.
This weekend I sort of learned to knit. I'm working on a "practice scarf" now. Here's my question: If I cast on 15 stitches to start, should I end up with way more than that on my needle as I knit? If not, what am I doing wrong, and if so, what happens when there's no room for all of that on my needle and I still have a way to go with my project?

(I looked around on the internets but have not found useful answers to this question.)

Thanks for your help.

1. Well,
I'm sort of a newbie knitter myself, but unless you are deliberately TRYING to add more stitches, no, if you start with 15 you should always wind up with 15.

Maybe you are knitting some stitches into holes other than the row you are on, or knitting some stiches into some holes twice, or something like that?

2. No
It sounds like you are adding stitches, most likely by having the yarn on the wrong side of the needles when you are either knitting or purling. Also, if you have less needle than stitches, your needles are of an incorrect length.

Here's the best knitting forum on the web. They are very nice, and a virtual encyclopedia of info:

4. Thank you. I think I see what I'm doing wrong now.
And thanks for the link too. I'm gonna go check it out right now. :hi:

5. I have 12 inches of my first scarf done
and I add stitches, also. You can fix it by knitting two stiches together to bring it back down to your original number.
