I saw two great movies this weekend My Son the Fanatic and Elmer Gantry
My Son the Fanatic was about a Pakastani cab driver in England who works all his life to give his son a great life. His son ends up forsaking "western" culture and becomes a devout muslim....the movie deals with the father's struggle to deal with this...
The most heart rendering part of the movie for me was when the father sat down to eat breakfast and his wife wouldn't sit at the table anymore...she stayed in the kitchen out of sight to make her son happy....
Elmer Gantry...classic with Burt Lancaster. About Revivalism....a down on his luck salesman helps a tent rival group reach its pinnacle...but he is vices come back to haunt him.... The movie showed that everyone is human... everyone makes mistakes and the volatility of religious fervor...
Elmer Gantry had a warning before it played ..it was an apology about how the movie wasn't meant to offend people with religous beliefs...I thought that was odd.
Burt Lancaster is one of my all-time favorites. This past week, I watched (again) "The Caine Mutiny" and "The Apartment." How great was Fred MacMurray in his roles in those movies? Very much underrated.
