If you want to know why the southern waters are completely devoid of life, watch the Shrimping episode of Dirty Jobs. The ratio of shrimp to 'everything else that gets pulled up when you pull everything off the floor of the ocean' is just incredible.

1. They just did a good one of crabbing in Maryland
using chicken necks on a longline, obviosuly small scale operation, then went through the entire processing of Maryland Blue Crabs.

2. I'm hoping this was a really bad batch
because the ratio of other dead critters to useable shrimp was over 100 to 1.

3. I think they stull use otter trawls in some of the medium scale to
small scale shrimp operations. And otter trawls are notoriously indescriminate about what they pull up. In the Maryland Crab segment he only hauled in 5 crabs, but it's longlining, so there is no bycatch.

4. This was before the spawn and before the actual legal shrimping season.
That's why the guy Mike spent most of his time talking to was some Game or Fisheries department biologist or something, the official legal purpose of their trip was to check the females to see where they were in terms of ovulation to guess how far away the spawn season was. Pretty smart guy.

This is fast becoming one of my favorite shows. The one they had on right before, he spent time with a cool pair of exterminators eliminating 5 billion roaches from someone's mobile home, and farming ostritches.

I like the host's self deprecating humor.
