I went to a store to pickup something and saw a Bentley parked
in front; again, it was not the "basic" Rolls, but the Bentley. I was thinking that no matter how much money I had I could never buy one of those. They start at £120,000 , which - I think - is a little over $212,000 U.S. There's too much suffering in the world.

Discuss.

This is the one I saw.

1. I can't justify buying a car that costs more than a house.
 It's a waste of money.

If I had to pay that much money, the car better meet 1000 mpg and have all the features necessary for nocturnal crimefighting.

lol

Sounds like ya need the batmobile.

I have to agree with you. I will admit I like driving (and driving fast ;) ) and like having the freedom to drive when I want (I live in the suburbs and there is no other way to get around).

But with increasing gas prices and for simple environmental sustanability, I realize my driving habits aren't practical (and I drive a saturn compact car) Unless a vehicle at $200000+ is getting over 100 mpg, I just don't see the use of that. Granted, it's not like I could afford such a thing anyways, but even if I could...it just seems like an insane amount of money.

It is a nice looking car though. Thehn again for 212000 grand, it better be!

27. It better be the Batmobile, KITT from Knight Rider, & the Enterprise
Unless it talks, drives itself, solves crimes, and travels through space and sometimes time --> it's not better than a Honda.

4. I seem to recall reading somewhere that they're less prone to breakdowns.
If that's true, if the thing really could last me a lifetime, I'd consider buying one (provided I had the cash up front.)

I'm going to spent about $150 K on cars over my lifetime (figured at a low ball, back of the envelope rate of 1 car per ten years at a minimum of $20K or $2K every year or so if I buy really junky ones and have to keep fixing them). I'd be perfectly happy to spend that entire wad on a machine that would be entirely reliable and comfortable for my lifetime if I could buy such a creature.

The sad thing is that the only people who can afford to take the truly frugal and wise option are the ones that don't need to take the frugal option. The rest of us are stuck driving POSes.

I think there's a threshold in wealth, at which point you no longer feel the need to impress anybody.

I'd buy it for reliability because a car like that comes with far more in the way of consumer protection than say a Ford.

My opinion, of course...

5. Cars are ultimately conveyances to get from point A to point B.
Nothing more.

And to take that into account, the idea of spending almost a quarter of a million dollars on a mode of transportation strikes me as extremely silly.

On a daily basis. I work in a very wealthy town (there's a Bentley/Lotus/Ferarri dealership in town and they do a decent business, from what I can see).

I've never been able to see spending that amount of money on anything but it's rather neat to see them.

7. 1962 Bentley Continental convertible
Edited on Sun Oct-23-05 04:25 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
A thing of beauty. Today's plastic, vinyl, and rubber cars just can't seem to match the classic lines of yesteryear. You can pick up a hardtop (in my opinion even more beautiful) for around $25,000 to $30,000 (in other words the cost of an average new car today). The old convertibles, however, are probably unaffordable because they're rare. I guess there's something seriously wrong with me, however, because I love old cars and can't stand new cars.

I think it's a pro baseball player (looks familiar, has a silver "B" in Red Sox style plate on the front). He's making mad cash, and spends it as such. Yeah, I think it sucks, considering what he COULD do with that money (though, admittedly, I don't know what else he does). I say this...if you spend $200,000 on a car, and you ALSO give $200,000 to decent charities, you get a pass on that from me. Not that it matters what I think, but it seems like a good quid pro quo if you give as much as you enjoy.

25. Oh, I don't know, if I had that kind of money, won the lottery,
I would probably pick up some old classic that would cost close to that amount, and yes, I would probably take it for a spin once in a while. After all, what good is all that money if you can't splurge a bit. But then again, I like old cars, I have four already.

But then again, if I was rich enough to afford such a car, I would also be rich enough to throw many millions into a trust, invest the trust money wisely, and have the trust continue to give out hundreds of thousands every year, even after I've died.

And yes, I do drive my old cars around and about once in a while. Before you jump all over my case about wasting gas, consider a limber four cars up aprox. once a month for aprox. 5-10 miles each. Forty miles of 15-20mpg per month. The rest of the time I'm doing the twenty-six mile one way commute on a Bajaj scooter, 100mpg, 55mph. Even with my old vehicles, I'm still averaging better gas mileage than most folks.

I'd probably get an entry-level luxury car (like a Lexus ES series, Mercedes Benz C-Class, BMW 3-Series, Lincoln LS), because I prefer practicality (and maybe a little luxury) to performance (Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and Dodge Vipers are out of the question for me, no matter how hot and hip they are. Same thing with SUVs).

63. If I were independently wealthy, I would splurge on a few things for sure
but some things are just too ostentatious as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, I would get custom tailored clothes because I would love to experience the feeling of an entire outfit that fits perfectly and looks flattering and is EXACTLY what I want. Not only that, I would be giving my money to a person or persons instead of a big corporation, and I could choose organic, sustainable cloth.

I would have a nice house, not a huge estate, but a nice house with an small solar heated and chemical-free indoor pool. Swimming is the exercise I enjoy the most but I'm rather self-conscious so that would be great. Where I would spend the money in my house would be installing state of the art systems for electricity, heat, cooling, etc. that would be solar and or wind powered and completely off the grid. I'd be self-sufficient and my home would be harmonious with the environment as much as possible.

My vehicles would be similar. I would spend money on custom vehicles that were powered by discarded oil or the sun, that were also safe and sturdy, but not overwhelming to those with whom I share the road.

But a Bentley? No thanks. There's no way that car is 10 times better than my Subaru, but it costs 10 times as much. I'm happy to pay extra for quality, but not just to show off. People who need that to feel good about themselves make me sad.
