i feel like listening to some slightly morose music, yet not depressing
enough to make me want to curl up & disappear

what would you suggest?

if i have that cd in my collection, and i doubt i do, i will consider listening to it

if you suggest something i don't have, i will probably nod my head politely & hint that i will check it out later, though i probably won't as i am struggling with laziness issues at this particular moment :7

3. The Beach Boys Love You
It's supposed to be happy, but it's really sad. :( I also really like it even though objectively it's incredibly cheesy.

25. cheesy, maybe but damn you gotta love this one
JUST ONCE IN MY LIFE (Beach Boys)

There's a lot of things I want
A lot of things that I'd like to be
But girl I don't foresee
A rags to riches story for me
I've given up on schemes
Cause everyone fell through
I've given up so many things
Don't ask me to give up on you

And baby baby
Just once in my life
Let me get what I want
Girl don't let me down
Just once in my life
Let me hold onto
A good thing I found
Don't let me down
Baby say that you'll be staying

I couldn't face the day
If you weren't here by my side
And if you went away
Then I'd be left without any pride
There's just one little dream
I've got to make come true
There's just one round I've got to win
I can't be a loser with you

And baby baby
Just once in my life
Let me get what I want
Girl don't let me down
Just once in my life
Let me hold onto
A good thing I found
Don't let me down
Baby say that you'll be staying

Every pot of gold
Ain't so easy to find
And if you'll stand by me
Girl I'll give you some of mine
I can't give you the world
But I'll work hard for you girl
Well I'll work hard
Every day
Baby don't leave me
Now say you won't leave me
Do this for me baby

Once in my life
Let me get what I want
Girl don't let me down
Just once in my life
Let me hold onto
A good thing I found
Don't let me down
Baby say that

12. Music that many find depressing..
... I find, well almost uplifting. It's a paradox :)

For music that should get you down but is guaranteed to lift you up, I recommend Cocteau Twins, it is impossible to be down listening to an angel sing :)

28. The orchestral adaptation of Chaminade's piano masterpiece "Autumn"
French composer Cecile Chaminade wrote some very interesting piano pieces. Her wonderful piece "Autumn" has been adapted for a full symphony orchestra. It is my favorite piece of classical music of all time for its singular beauty and splendor. It has all the glory and sad melancholy of the autumn season. You can smell the wet earth, hear the rain, see flocks of migrating birds and the haystacks from the harvest just by closing your eyes and listening to that piece. It's breathtaking.

36. "Psycho Killer" by the Talking Heads
I can't seem to face up to the facts
I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax
I can't sleep cause my bed's on fire
Don't touch me I'm a real live wire

You start a conversation you can't seem to finish it
You're talkin' a lot but you're not sayin' anything
When I have nothing to say my lips are sealed
Say something once why say it again

Psycho killer, qu'est que c'est
Far better
Run away
Psycho killer, que'st que c'est
Far better
Run away
Oh yeah

Hello, boys and girls. This is your old pal, Stinky Wizzleteats. This is a song about a whale. No! This is a song about being happy! That's right! It's the Happy Happy Joy Joy song!

Happy Happy Joy Joy Happy Happy Joy Joy

Happy Happy Joy Joy Happy Happy Joy Joy
Happy Happy Joy Joy Joy!

I don't think you're happy enough! That's right! I'll teach you to be happy! I'll teach your grandmother to suck eggs! Now, boys and girls, let's try it again!

Happy Happy Joy Joy Happy Happy Joy Joy
Happy Happy Joy Joy Happy Happy Joy Joy
Happy Happy Joy Joy Happy Happy Joy Joy
Happy Happy Joy Joy Joy!

If'n you aint the grandaddy of all liars! The little critters of nature... They don't know that they're ugly! That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumblebee! I told you I'd shoot! But you didn't believe me! Why didn't you believe me?!

Happy Happy Joy Joy Happy Happy Joy Joy

53. i can see how that can be quite depressing
because it's so joyous, yet the individual listening to it may not be able to reach that level of bliss

it's sad when someone can't be that happy :(

I'd recommend "Live at the Old Quarter." The earlier records are fine but overproduced. The glut of recent releases--by people who tried to help him, people who tried to rip him off & his last ex-wife--can be a bit dicey.
