what percentage of your income goes towards rent?
I'm getting my own place (finally), and was curious to know what percentage of their income other folks are spending for housing. Is 40-45 percent of my monthly take-home too much?

12. manhattan can't be cheap..
35% seems like a decent figure. Leaves you a little something in the entertainment budget. Thx!

I spend about 35% on housing.

On edit: I live in Silicon Valley.

14. 25% of my current income won't get much here in san diego..
I could find a studio for that, maybe even a small 1 bed. I checked out a nice restored Victorian with 3 other units built in yesterday, but the area had me a little concerned for the safety of my vehicles.

4. None, I live at work
but I'd probably make about twice what I do without housing included.

7. About half-- but I'm paying two rents
I'm paying 1/2 the mortgage and other bills on my house until that gets sold in my divorce settlement (my ex pays the other half). Plus I'm also paying rent on a tiny 1 BR apartment, where I live.

Luckily, the bills come due at opposite times of the month, so I can manage. Otherwise I'd be largely screwed.

8. I am lucky -- I spend 19% of gross income on rent.
(My rent does not include heat/electric, though.)

I spend 50% of my monthly income on rent. But I live in Boston, it's very expensive. :(

On edit: I don't have a roommate, which might alleviate some of this spending, but I hate living with people, so it's better for me to pay for a tiny studio apartment.

11. yeah, i'm trying to get away from roomies too..
Not cheap here in San Diego, either. There are places I could live rather inexpensively, but they're kinda scary. The place I'm looking at could hardly be considered upscale, but it's going to cost me $940 before utils.

15. If the movie ticket costs more than $10, I'll wait for the DVD.
Seriously, though...

Wow. I just figured it out...

About 1/3 of the household income goes toward the house payment and lot rent (we live in a double-wide mobile home) combined.
