Canada's worst ice storm on record wreaked havoc
in five eastern provinces, halting air travel,
shutting down the nation's busiest rail route
and forcing more than 3 million people Saturday
to endure another day without electricity.
The storm, which also descended on four U.S. states,
was being blamed for 10 Canadian deaths.
U.S. President Clinton declared five counties
in northern New York disaster areas Saturday,
which Gov. George Pataki said would help to provide
emergency generators, cots, blankets,
diapers and water to a still unknown number of stranded
people in the rural area.

When the temperatures inched above freezing Saturday morning
in Montreal, the ice-covered city began to thaw.
"It's like a defrosting fridge," remarked Lee Thomas,
co-owner of the Corner Snack Bar, a downtown restaurant.
Thomas had customers coming into her cafe all night.
Police officers brought in bread,
and waitresses begged customers for candles.
Saturday marked the sixth day of the icy onslaught.
