BitTorrent user convicted over movie sharing

And since everyone who uses bittorrent is a server, everyone is at risk.

3. Eh... I am mostly an Anime torrent user
And the bulk of DLs are in the grey category. Not yet licensed so not likely pursued.

6. So am I
The only anime-related C&D I've ever seen was ADV films going after the Pirate Bay for having Evangelion. Their response was predictably hilarious. :)

I get most of my anime from Usenet anyway (for a show like Trinity Blood or Kyo Mara Maou which is still on the air in Japan and gets fansubbed weekly). But for an ongoing series that I've managed to be out of the loop on like Bleach, I use BT. Getting those huge episode packs is a godsend.

4. Yeah, but
This article is leaving out one crucial fact. "The Man" is not going after Joe and Jane Schmo who is downloading a movie for kicks. They are going after scene people, initial seeders, and high volume uploaders--the top of the food chain, as it were.

FWIW, I don't download movies because most of them are crap anyway (the last movie I downloaded was Advent Children, because the US release was delayed for no real reason). Downloading anything mainstream on BT is a stupid move in general (your IP is exposed for all the world to see) but you are not going to see mass roundups of average movie downloaders. The MPAA simply have bigger fish to fry.

5. I usually don't DL movies
Anime mostly (as mentioned above). But I did DL the Wallace and Gromit movie. But this is after I spent money to see it and I plan on buying the DVD. I just wanted to get some screencaps.

7. I am probably going to download Serenity
But only because I am antsy for the DVD release and can't wait. They've gotten my money several times over though...I saw the movie three times and pre-ordered the DVD box set of the show back before it was released.

10. You're not one of those people who
are buying multiple tickets so as to keep Serenity on the box office top ten? What is that all about? Is this like Sutter Kane in "In the Mouth of Madness"?

11. No, I swear I'm not
Really! I'm from the sane part of the fandom (we're an endangered species).

I just really liked the movie and wanted to see it a couple more times. It helps that I've got a theater nearby with decent matinee prices.

12. Though pretty soon
there's going to be crazy people wielding axes on the street asking passerbys, "Do you watch Serenity?"

13. I know!
Okay, I've been known to talk Firefly up to folks on occasion, but I've never understood the crazies in fandom who feel it's their Joss-given duty to spread the word of St. Mal. I'm as big a geek as anyone but really at some point you just need to log off Livejournal, turn the computer off and go outside. :P

8. How did they catch him?
I thought bittorrent was anonymous.

9. Far from it
Edited on Tue Oct-25-05 01:44 PM by Chovexani
You can see the IPs of anyone on a given torrent, both seeders and leechers, quite easily. It's probably the worst p2p method if you're looking for anonymity.

Usenet is far safer just because it seems to be either under the radar, or the *AAs haven't found a way to go after it. At this point I have to assume it's the latter because there has been all kinds of pirated shit on Usenet for as long as I can remember and it just keeps going.
