2. This will be one of the shortest discussions on DU.
I think you've got widespread agreement on that one. :-)

3. Most consistently far-below-average performer ever
Hate him. HATE HIM!

Also, the probability that he'll appear in some form at least once per hour on any "80's Flashback Weekend" is 100%.

Awful, awful, awful.

5. The odd thing is, at one time he was brilliant.
Or was it just Peter Gabriel who made him look brilliant?

10. No, early Genesis were fantastic.
In my opinion, the best prog band around until Gabriel left.

Then....sigh....the inevitable beardrockers took over.

But, just to show how fucked up *I* am, I'll go on the record stating that I unironically like some early 80's Genesis/Collins. "I Missed Again" posesses a great melody and arrangement, "Paperlate" is an overlooked pop gem with horrible lyrics, and one would have to admit that they definitely had honed their timbres to the point where they OWNED their own sound by '81.

By '83, it was all shite, though.

19. "Duke" is still one of my favorite Genesis albums
although it's five years post-Gabriel, Genesis still had something at that stage in their career.

I even liked a couple tunes on "Invisible Touch", but after "Abacab" the flashes of brilliance became fewer and far between.

I still hold Phil largely responsible for Genesis' decline into twee-land.

20. Great drummer, but then he had to go and write "Inviseeble Touch"
I LOVED the Duke/Abacab/Genesis stuff, and of course, everything before that. I love "Misunderstanding" and "Mama", which was pretty dark for a pop song.

7. Not a bad drummer, but he should have never been the frontman.
The Genesis records were actually pretty good up until 1983 or so, but then Phil Collins MTV pop star took over and it was downhill from there.

9. Some day there will be whole religions based on the teachings of'Sussudio'
There’s this girl that’s been on my mind
All the time, sussudio oh oh
Now she don’t even know my name
But I think she likes me just the same
Sussudio oh oh

Oh if she called me I’d be there
I’d come running anywhere
She’s all I need, all my life
I feel so good if I just say the word
Sussudio, just say the word
Oh sussudio

Now I know that I’m too young
My love has just begun
Sussudio oh oh
Ooh give me a chance, give me a sign
I’ll show her anytime
Sussudio oh oh

Ah, I’ve just got to have her, have her now
I’ve got to get closer but I don’t know how
She makes me nervous and makes me scared
But I feel so good if I just say the word
Sussudio just say the word
Oh sussudio, oh

Ah, she’s all I need all of my life
I feel so good if I just say the word
Sussudio I just say the word
Oh sussudio I just say the word
Oh sussudio I’ll say the word
Sussudio oh oh oh
Just say the word

13. Genesis reunion in the works?
October 22, 2005
Peter Gabriel Acknowledges Meeting With Genesis To Discuss Possible Reunion!

Steve Hackett has recently stated in interviews that there was a possibility of a Genesis reunion and that there was to be a meeting with former band members to discuss this long-anticipated event. This was confirmed by Peter Gabriel on the tabloid television show Extra yesterday. Gabriel, who was promoting his forthcoming concert DVD, Still Growing Up: Live and Unwrapped (due November 15th in North America), was asked about a Genesis reunion and commented that the meeting Hackett referred to will be taking place - although no specific meeting date was mentioned. Stay tuned for details as we get them!

A full Genesis reunion could be interesting. And it would put Phil Collins back in his proper role, as the drummer.

24. Holy SHIT. I'm there like Fred Astaire if this is true.
And they'd BETTER play the old stuff, FULL versions of the old stuff, not Inveeseeble Touch Yeh horseshite.

It'd never happen, but they should play "Supper's Ready". I'd urinate right then and there if the lights go black and all of a sudden you hear Gabriel - "Walking across the sitting-room, I turn the television off . ."

18. I disagree
He's not one of my favorite artists or anything, but I disagree that he sucks ass. For one, a lot of Genesis's work with him as lead singer isn't that bad and some of it is quite good. For another, while his solo career has produced some total shit (that eighties-production-drenched "Groovy Kind of Love" and "You'll be in My Heart" from that Disney movie) some of his solo work is alright. I'm thinking of "In the Air Tonight", "I Don't Care Anymore", "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven", the cheesy but still likeable IMHO "Two Hearts" and a few others. So I'm taking a bold stand here and saying that Phil Collins doesn't suck ass! (I'm a little scared of what happens to me next...)

21. I agree with you!
I just heard "In the Air Tonight" yesterday, and I LOVE it......

I have always liked his songs....admittedly I haven't heard any of his recent stuff.....

But I love the old songs.....

So you have at least one ally! Me.....FWIW...
