IT people - Quick question
My company's local server went down so home office is setting us up to have a main server located in Canada. We were set up that each branch had a local server and we were able to get to each server across the country.

Is it typical for a company to have just one main server that everyone in all branches connect to, or is it common to have local servers?

I ask because I think it isn't a good idea to have just one server located in one place. If that city loses power that means the whole continent will be down.

What is standard practice?

1. Depends where the main server is hosted
if it's in a site with triple redundant net connections and an independent powersupply built on earthquake proof platforms and in a water/fire proof facility, it'll be fine ;-)

3. Sorta
Here's what my webhosting company has

http://www.mediatemple.net/company/aboutus/technology-infrastructure.php

but, that's for an offsite system, and it'll cost TOP DOLLAR to have your very own server housed there, and the secure connections to it would cost so much you'd be shooting yourself in the foot.

A main server from which updates trickle down from is okay, but backup servers that can switch to independent at each office should be in place.

4. Thanks
I am just trying to see what other people do. At our branch I am one of two "IT" people. My supervisor and I have kept this thing running for the last 10 years or so but we are self-taught. I step in when he can't figure it out..lol (don't tell him I said that). I know there are some professionals here that could answer some of these questions.

5. After your main server goes on line in Canada

you'll find it easier to access porn.
