Myra Breckinridge is out on DVD. Yeah, and I just watched it! Anyone
else ever seen it?

I'm old enough to recall that it was quite scandulous when it came out, and I can see why. It really is a glorious mess. I think Mae West died 5 years before she "acted" in it.

Raquel Welch does a commentary on it that you can listen to. She's actually quite honest. Mae hated her, and Raquel admits to acting like a diva at times.

Sort of makes me want to read the book....

6. Well, I guess I know what book I'm going to try and get from the
library tomorrow...I wonder if the book holds up well over time.

7. actually...
I think i might have found it more shocking if I had read it when it came out. I think I was a bit jaded by the time I had read it. hell, it can't hurt to check it out. I would be curious to hear what you thought.

8. The movie, although it came out in 1970, is very "Swinging Sixties"
if you know what I mean...I wonder if that comes across in the book--like it really reflects the time in which it was written.

2. I've read the book, but not seen the movie (yet)
I know Gore Vidal disowned the movie as a absolute bastardization of his book (and it's an excellent book). I understand it's a chance to see an almost embalmed Mae West in one of her last roles.

I'm not sure if I actually want to see the movie. :scared:

5. Gore wrote the first screenplay for the movie...
...the studio didn't like it, but I guess when they bought the rights, he was given first crack at it.

Part of the problem with the movie was they never really had a coherent script when they started shooting, and sort of winged it day-to-day.

3. I remember watching that movie when it came out in 1970.
I enjoyed it then so I wouldn't mind watching it again. I would like to see the commentary.

4. The old film clips cut in between the scenes in the movie are actually
pretty cute...it's one of those movies that could have been good, but it never decided what it wanted to be.

9. Wasn't it originally rated X?
Rex Reed has a sex change and emerges looking like Raquel Welch.

I read the book but never saw the movie.

10. Yes, it was rated X...and in the movie Rex only dreams that he has had
a sex change, and then at the end you realize that. That in itself is a let-down. Then again, one of the MAJOR flaws is that if any guy had a sex change he would not come out looking like Raquel Welch!

On the DVD is the AMC "Backstory" show about the movie...and apparently they originally thought of having a guy do the Raquel part, but dressed in drag. Could have been funnier that way.

11. I guess I didn't read the entire book.

I read it on the sly (my brother had a copy) and I was way too young to be reading things like that! }(

:D

12. It's a really tacky movie.
I loved it :)

And it's still scandalous - Raquel fucking a guy with a strap on?

You still can't talk about that movie without offending someone....

Khash.
