Why dont have hydraulics/sensors on cars to automatically lift them
Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 08:23 PM by henslee
when pulling into a spot with a concrete marker or for slowly going over a low clearance bump. I see so many folks in expensive cars scraping under carriages and front spoilers.

1. Because that would be heavy and expensive.

4. Air bags work wonders, Rovers and Rolls have them
but when it comes to handling, progressive hydraulic shocks are wonderful, but don't like reservoirs and pumps. Too much pressure involved. And gas shocks are even better, but you won't know until you have to throw them out when they break. If they have to go where they are going to bust up the undercarriage, they should take the Posrche Cayenne.

Besides, half the fun of owning an expensive car is spending twice it's worth in getting it repaired, either from crappy construction or things that go bump in the night.

5. Here's a car that has a manual system like that.....
Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 10:51 PM by A HERETIC I AM

Ferrari F50.
It's a switch on the dash that lifts the front end about 5 or 6 inches. (I've driven one a short distance. Transported it on a truck i used to drive)

Of course, the car was about $480,000 new so you kind of expect that sort of thing!

6. Citroens have a hydraulic suspension system
I own an old 1969 DS 21. It's the smoothest ride in the world. You barely know you're going over speed bumps. I think they still hold the patent on the technology after all these years and license it to Rolls Royce, who use it on the rear suspension. You have to put a green fluid in periodically. When you turn on the ignition, the car rises into the air for a few inches. It's murder though when the car won't start and you have to put it on a flat bed truck as there's almost no clearance from the ground.

7. Citroen's don't count
Neither do Renaults. Unless you live in Europe. The US never appreciated them. And, they were quirky little bastits. The SM sports car was amazing for it's time. And it has the hydropneumatic suspension too. Used the green hyd. fluid for heat and cold resistance, but the synthetic of today is much better. A doctor I went to in the '80s had an SM. But couldn't explain why.
