A-Rod wins MVP??? Delgado had a better season!!!
A-Rod got robbed last year when they gave it to Miggy Tejada, this year Delgado drove in 145 runs to A-Rod 118, had a better BA. .302 to .298 but had 5 less HRs, 47 to 42.
Why didnt A-Rod win it last year when he had a monster year?
You gotta wonder about sportswriters!

1. MVP isn't given to the best player
Edited on Tue Nov-18-03 03:08 AM by VermontDem2004
The player who is the most valuable to his team.

3. "Most Valuable" to a last place team?
Granted Toronto wasnt a champ this year but they were at least 500. Texas was horrid this year!

David Ortiz of Boston won many games in tight situations, carried the Sox for weeks ata time and his team SHOULD HAVE BEEN SERIES CHAMPS! Ortiz should have got it! Or at the very least Degado who knocked in 145 runs!

2. I say give the benefit of the doubt to the player on the winning team
A-Rod isn't worth a damn on a losing team. Just how "valuable" is he to the Rangers? Did his presence on the team preclude them from losing 100 games? Ooooh!! I'm in awe!!

8. Depends on how you interpret "value"
According to the BBWAA, Value is "the sum of a player's offensive and defensive contributions". As I posted elsewhere, their offensive contributions are very similar. Rodriguez played a tougher defensive position, at a Gold Glove-calibre level, and therefore deserves the MVP.

4. A-Rod deserved to win
BA/ OBP/ SLG
Rodriguez: .298/.396/.600
Delgado: .302/.426/.593

These are pretty close. I tend to go with the player with the highest OBP when it's this close, but Rodriguez posted these numbers while being more valuable defensively, and that, I think, earns him the award.

5. Driving in runs wins games!
145 to 118 with Delgado being the former.

Carlos got ripped!

7. Nope, RBIs are a useless stat
All it proves is that the people hitting in front of Delgado were on base more often. It's meaningless, IMO, to derive an opinion on Delgado or on Rodriguez, based on the other people in the lineup.

12. You are right. Driving runs in is meaningless
in baseball. If one batter doesn't do another will.

6. Delgado has "Juan Gon" to thank
A-Rod got ripped off in '96, when Juan Gonzales got the MVP. A-Rod got left off of a couple ballots simply because they didn't believe a #2 hitter should get the MVP.

But at the same time, when there were 10 guys in the AL this year who got at least 1 first-place vote, it really could have gone any number of ways. My guess is that there were some writers tired of the "he can't get MVP on a last place team" defense. I have to admit, I don't buy that either. So is the MVP then limited to just the top 24 of 30 teams?

9. Delgado started slacking off
post all star break. I believe he produced about half of what he did prior to the break, that might have affected how people voted.

10. Agreed. A-Rod should have won it last year
Not this year. But my God, what a player! I hope Texas doesn't trade him this off-season.

13. yeah...makes no sense
If you play for a last-place team you should be automatically disqualified from consideration for MVP.

If they lost 100 games with you. They can lose 100 games without you.

14. Shhh! Don't let Cub fans hear you say that...
That would mean no Ernie Banks or Andre Dawson MVPs!
