"Tell Us the Truth"! 1,000 anti-Bush, anti-FTAA Activists in Tampa?
Edited on Tue Nov-18-03 10:09 AM by JanMichael
In one place? Same time? You bet!

Went to the "Tell Us The Truth" show last night with KG, it's a must see. It was sponsered by WMNF 88.5 http://www.wmnf.org/ .

http://www.tellusthetruth.org/

Local paper review of last night's show...

http://tampatrib.com/floridametronews/MGA66WGI5ND.html

Billy Bragg http://www.billybragg.co.uk/index.html is my new personal hero, the man rocks with a punk sound and a Left (Hell he came out and proclaimed that he's a Democratic Socialist for goodness sakes. Funny thing is that I didn't expect such an approving roar from the crowd. WNMF has a mix of the Left. Democrats, Greens and apparently a truckload of Socialists, who knew?) political vibe.

His theme? Accountability! Let's make them ALL accountable for their actions. Both in the Political and Economic venues. Seriously talented Progressive music especially his anti-Iraq Invasion song...

Mike Mills (REM) surprised me...I didn't realize how radical the man is. He had an edge that I'd never seen before and I loved it.

If you like politically motivated rap then the Boots Riley of "The Coup" had a set that would've knocked your socks off. Started with a rightious poem, no music, and then had Lester Chambers, Tom Morello and another bass player back him up and I swear it was like Rage Against the Machine was ready to reanimate on stage. "Five Million Ways to Kill a CEO"? Sure enough.

Lester Chambers was simply awesome. Hasn't lost a beat.

I was also surprised with Tom Morello's songs. For one it was all accoustic, for two he's a baritone...Almost had a Johnny Cash sound, the paper says Cohen, I suppose a mix?

A truly remarkable event and I'm glad I got the chance to go. Of course I wish you all could have been there! Although some of our "Centrists" might have squirmed a little:evilgrin:

If you have a chance to catch one of the final shows DO IT!

PS~ I had to leave after Billy Bragg, it's an hour drive to Sarasota, but KG stayed and saw the final jam...How was it KG?

3. Yes & Yes!
I do.

Think I should change the subject line of this thread? It's sinking faster than the Bucs.

4. I don't know honey
?

Maybe if you changed the title to something like "1,000 Yaks and a tube of KY" people would pay attention.

I saw Billy Bragg a few years back, he's about as left as they come. The Morello set sounds cool too!

Isn't Tampa the home to neo-con jerkass Glenn Beck? I bet he'll have some choice words about it on his *WRETCH*ed show today...:eyes:

Edit: I wouldn't have even bothered reading this if it'd had "yaks and KY" in the title, hope that helps!:hi:

WTF is a yak, anyway?

7. Bragg is pretty far Left, as am I, however Morello...
...is beyond either of us.

Apparently they've known each other for ten years or so.

Beck would have been terrified to be in the Tampa Theatre last night...

they closed out with a stirring rendition of the Chambers Bro's 'Time'

lot's of Kucinich folks outside the theatre. i got a cool DK 'baseball card' thingie. looks like he was the only candidate represented there.

WMNF-FM is da bomb. awesome music, leftist politics. it's the best thing about living in TB.

mike played keys when the ensamble was onstage, but played acoustic guitar for his solo turn. his style brought john lennon to mind for me...

17. He had a couple of choice words directed at Bush too.
I was truly surprised by his apparent radicalism...

14. SE was there.
Edited on Wed Nov-19-03 12:16 AM by KG
michael only missed the last couple of numbers.

SE seemed alittle distracted. did 'you know the rest', 'jerusalem', 'whats a simple man to do?' and couple other tunes. he's looking very fit and trim, but getting alittle thin up top.

my fave parts of the show were the spken word things by boots riley and 'the nightwatchman' (tom morello) i hadn't seen billy bragg before but have known about him for years.

not sure who was having the most fun, the artists or the crowd. :)

seems after the show bragg went to the bar next door and was feeding quarters into the juke and playing air guitar!

edit for clarity
