Gotta tell you this story:
I went to many a midnight showing of RH in high school and shortly after. Had an 8-track tape (!) of the soundtrack and played it around the house for years. My oldest daughter loved that tape, and we did the Time Warp together and she learned to yell the participation lines and all that when she was really young. A few years back we got the video, and she enjoyed that immensely. There haven't been theater showings of RH around here in many years (that I'm aware of), but it's been her dream for a long time to finally see it in the theater -- with me.
So now she's 22 years old, and I get a phone call at work recently asking what I'm doing Friday night? The reason was, she had two tickets to a LIVE showing of RH at a nearby community theater playhouse! A radio station had been offering the tickets to whoever could answer all the trivia questions they asked about RH. She won!
I was a little bummed when I realized that it was a stage production, not the "real" thing. Even more bummed about the playhouse's restriction on throwing anything -- no rice, no toilet paper, no cards, no squirt guns. Only prop allowed was the lighters while singing "There's a Light Over at the Frankenstein Place".
But it turned out to be absolutely wonderful!!!! They did wonders with the staging itself, and the actors were tremendous! They stayed true to the script to the letter, but each actor brought his or her own "thing" to portraying their character, and it was a RIOT!!!! The guy playing Riff Raff stole the show.
Another fun aspect was that much of the audience was older (as in VERY senior citizen), in suits and ties and glitzy dresses... I expected a massive walkout when they realized this wasn't "Phantom of the Opera" or something, but they appeared to be having the time of their lives. :)
