As long as you are heterosexual, and not marrying your sister, anyone can get married: crack whores, drug lords, prostitutes, pimps, abusers, child molesters, criminals, murderers, rapists and serial killers, come on down and get into that wedding gown! If marriage is such a sacred institution, that would be permanently demeaned by allowing gays to marry, how come I can go to Vegas and be married by an Elvis impersonator?
Here's a story from my life: my mother used to have a thing for bikers. I lived in Sacramento when I was eight, and many of my mother's friends were members of the Hells Angels biker group.
My mother also had a thing for prisoners. She had a pen-pal at San Quentin. Every now and then mom would take us out of school so we could drive to the prison and visit with the convict she was falling in love with. Can you imagine that? As a kid? Spending the day at San Quentin? What fun.
The man my mother was falling in love with was a racist, a drunk, a drug addict and an abuser. Among his many prison tattoos were Nazi swastika and, on each elbow, a spider web. The spider web tattoo immediately tells other prisoners that you are in a white-supremacsit gang. It also indicates that you have murdered someone -- probably a black prisoner -- twice.
Well, eventually the courtship concluded with a marriage, held within the hallowed halls of San Quentin. The prison chaplain performed the ceremony and, when mom's new husband was released from prison, we kids got a friendly new stepfather who was a drunk, who abused drugs, who beat my mother, and abused us children.
I endured almost ten years with this racist psycho, and finally fled to the U.S. Navy in 1986.
If this country is going to prevent individuals from being married, I'd think we could start with child-molesting murderers.
