2. I live in Seattle - it was dark practically all day today.
Whenever I sat for more than 10 minutes at a time, it was a struggle to stay awake today. x(

20. No wonder the ancients lit candles and prayed as the seasons
"ate up the sun earlier and earlier" ---

On the other hand, there are 18 hours of sunlight in most areas of the world on June 21, during the summer solstice.

And in the winter, only about 6 hours.

We vacationed in late May in Edinburgh, Scotland, very close to the Arctic Circle. The sky glowed, even at 2 AM. THAT was weird!

22. Me, too. I call myself a "low thermal" person. I like it dark and cool.
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 12:00 AM by Radio_Lady
I get "cabin fever" when it's mid-summer and in the 80s and 90s degrees F. I do have a love-hate thing going, because I grew up in Florida and love the flowers and the sun and swimming.

But in the summer, I have to stay in air conditioning, or in a wet swim suit, or in the pool. Here I am at age 15, at a favorite place of my childhood, the Venetian Pool in Coral Gables, Florida.

I love winter.

(And I'm married to a guy who loves summer -- imagine that! How did we find each other?)

I'm also a fall/winter person. Summer and spring are fine and all, but I feel most comfortable in cooler weather. I hate being overheated!

Our stupid Repub Govenor read in some Repub play book that you have to push an issue and get action on it or something (a la *'s stupid "We're going to Mars" fiasco) and time zone change was it.

But, hey, I'm not bitter.

30. Hey, I read about that...won't your state have like 4 time zones?
I hate the darkness too. I take the bus and get off in a real dark rural place and if my ride isn't there to pick me up what will I do? Walk along the dark road with a flashlight and hope no one hits me into a ditch. Guess I'll have to buy one of those reflecting vests and glow strips.

32. Possibly.
For a while, they were toying with the idea of letting each county decide what time zone they would be in. So, you could drive across the state, going "It's 4, now it's 5, now it's 4 again!" That would have been fun. :eyes:

23. Do you know the background story of DST? Here are two great books:
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 12:16 AM by Radio_Lady
Check out:

Spring Forward: The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time (Hardcover)
by Michael Downing

and

Seize the Daylight : The Curious and Contentious Story of Daylight Saving Time (Hardcover)
by David Prerau

Great information -- and ability to read without buying -- at amazon.com on these two books. (But they won't let me copy text to insert it here!) I was supposed to interview the first author, but he got a commercial job which wiped part of his book tour to Portland, Oregon earlier this year!

40. Absolutely not! Don't forget, I live in the South.
As Florence King once said, "Build a fence around the South and you'd have one big madhouse." She was my grandmother's sister, nuttier than a fruitcake. My lasting memory of her is sitting on the sofa in Grandmother's living room eating Vick's salve out of the jar with a spoon. Yuk.

Fortuneately for me I have a little baby to look forward to going home and seeing.

I do tend to really get down this time of year (until New Years) but I am fighting it with a work out routine that will keep me a bouncy ball of energy.

36. If you had to drive out of Washington, DC
from work in the dark, you'd understand how truthful your statement is.

There are three forces at work ruining rush hour in DC:

1) People
2) Construction. Who is ruining 23rd street and the Memorial Circle/Bridge, and Why? Really, WHY?
3) Pennsylvania drivers. No idea why, but they all showed up this year, and they neglected to get training on the contact sport that is DC driving.

Having it already nighttime when these forces are active just exacerbates an already crappy situation.
