So...am I the only one with a rapidly-expanding Ignore list?
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 01:47 AM by BlueIris
The Alito nomination and the Fitzgerald investigation have motivated many folks around here to show their true colors...and their nasty disruptiveness isn't anything I need in my use of DU. Not "calling anyone out" or going into great detail, but the number of people on my Ignore list has probably tripled in the last week. Anyone else feeling the change and motivated to do something to shield yourself from the yuckiness?

1. I could triple mine
and it would be the same. But now I am curious to see who is revealing their true colors, and what those colors are.

2. I don't ignore anyone.
I prefer to laugh at people instead of ignoring them.

5. Same here. I can't imagine any post bothering me that much.

I don't like spinach, but when I pass it in a cafeteria line, I never get the urge to roll my eyes or chastise those who do like it.

3. nope
I've never used the ignore feature here in my time at DU; whether we have trolls, disrupters, or people who think differently has no bearing on my experience here; I just don't let it get to me. In the end, this is just an internet message board; it doesn't control my emotions anymore than I let it.

The hide thread feature is a godsend though, especially for the spammers in GD, GD:P, or The Lounge...

I hide threads. But I haven't put anyone on ignore. The mouse with a scroll wheel comes in handy.

Unless the accusations are so aggregious as to incite anger I just move on.

6. Before, the pathetic, ignorant, prejudiced people on this site
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 02:38 AM by BlueIris
didn't get to me. Nothing they posted was really, in my eyes, THAT bad. And I've got, contrary to what this thread might suggest, a pretty thick skin. Now? They've really gone beyond the pale. WAY beyond. And even if they had not exposed their sick innards to the civilized around here, even my cavernous capacity for letting the shit of the truly pitiable has FILLED UP. I just don't need that. DU, to me, is mainly a tool, now. A resource. I don't need creepy, misogynist, bigoted, ignorance mucking up my ability to utilize this resource.

10. ...can't...go there...I alert when necessary (which is often).
Maybe the answer to the question I asked in this thread is: yes. Okay. Everyone has the right to NOT be aggravated by these offensive posts. But when even I am pissed off? I know there's a problem.

But not with a real freeper. They are just ignorant. I expect more from DUers. Sometimes I can become quite vexed.

16. The "but I'm a Democrat, too" issue really bothers me, too.
Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 03:22 AM by BlueIris
The registered Democrats I know aren't misogynists. They don't refer to the practitioners of Islam or Christianity or other faiths with derogatory language. They aren't threatened by, or disrespectful toward gay folks. They're intelligent and tolerant human beings. The folks posting this crap appear to legitimately consider themselves progressives.

20. Well, not all registered Dems are tolerant across the board.
We need them, though, on the economic issues. Some of them believe in tolerance in theory, but have trouble in practice. But that does show some movement on their part. I'm not excusing, just trying to understand.

But it does get frustrating, and taking the high road can make one weary.

22. I do not know that many registered Democrats
but the anti-gay-marriage initiatives in Kansas and Missouri passed by huge majorities, indicating that, sadly, alot of Democrats voted for them too. I am not sure about the misogyny. There seems to be a wide variance in what that word means.

25. I think it's the marriage thing. Civil unions might go over better.
I think we should all have civil unions, church ceremonies are optional anyway. And the individual denominations should decide if they want to marry the couple. Marriage is a civil partnership and a religious sacrament. The state should recognize the partnership, the churches can perform the marriage ceremony...or not.

I can understand the problems they are having with the marriage issue, these folks are not exactly sophisticated New Yorkers or well educated San Franciscans. They are just plain, simple, sometimes church going folks who are caught in a cultural time warp. Many of them are trying to understand, but the world is going way too fast for them to easily keep up. They are just getting to understand the living together thing. :)

Only one person has cheesed me enough that I wanted to put them on ignore, and he was tombstoned before it got to the point that I had to put his sorry behind on ignore. Problem solved.

12. I don't think ignore lists should exist
I can't imagine being that pathetically scared of someone else's opinion or style. Besides, on a multi faceted forum like this someone could be a howl in the Lounge even if he/she completely disagrees with me on a politician or issue.

The negativity doesn't bother me in the least. I'm hardly a blinders-on unrealistic optimist myself. This forum has been alive for two elections, 2002 and 2004. Newsflash: the people who had pessimistic views got it right both times. Maybe they're simply in tune to the political realities post-9/11.

I continue to believe the CIA leak affair is massively overblown in regard to 2006 and 2008. Negative news for the other side has no foundation on our behalf. I'll be thrilled if we win the New Jersey and Virginia gov races. Those are absolutes, and positive, not vague desperate pleas for GOP implosion.

Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 03:18 AM by BlueIris
The posters I'm putting on Ignore aren't there because of an opinion or style they have which doesn't agree with me. They're there because they post nasty, often bigoted and misogynist shit.

17. That's a rather narrow view of
the utility of the ignore feature. I myself use it to keep the people who provoke me out of my sight. That way, I don't get the opportunity to post posts in reply to assholes that will get me banned. A far cry from being "pathetically scared".

Edited on Wed Nov-02-05 03:31 AM by BlueIris
but the posts from some of the newer jerks around these parts, and the old jerks who are exposing their true natures, are more than I can handle. Putting them off my radar screen permanently helps not just my blood pressure, but my helps preserve my access to my account.

that I logout to see what's in some of those "Ignored" posts; but that way I can't post in reply, but I do get to read what they have to say.

Without knowing the details of your disagreements, I can't offer judgment, but to presume your total innocence seems disingenuous.

27. Right now, I only have one person on Ignore.
Others have been there, but after a time-out, I un-ignored them.

Well, OK, that's not exactly true - I was curious as to what they were up to. Of those three, one is relatively harmless, one is kinda funny, and the other is an asshole - but I don't care.
