Black Fury; Muni is one of the greatest actors ever..

One of the greatest singers ever!

I have a couple of songs by her on my show; so much emotion in that voice; and the life she had....

She had the ability to sing songs in a way that lifted you up, and songs that broke your heart. "Strange Fruit" is probably my favorite of her songs, partly because of the WAY she sang it, but also because, when I was young and visited (and lived for awhile) in Arkansas, there were still "White's Only" and "Colored Only" signs all over the place, and the "N" word was thrown about with abandon. While I never saw someone lynched, I lived in the midst of the culture that fostered such things. How I came out of that kind of culture relatively unscathed (i.e. not a flaming racist) is amazing. Guess I just never understood why someone with a different skin color could be considered "less than" me.
